Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

Do you all see where this potentially is leading: to a Democrat removal of the 2nd Amendment. Yes exactly that badboy.

This is interesting…

Though the trial had continued, the precedent did not. Fifty years later, when Judge George W. English resigned during his Senate trial, the proceedings stopped. The same, of course, held true for Richard Nixon. When Senator Barry Goldwater (R-AZ) and other top Republican congressional leaders came to the White House to meet with Nixon, they knew that if the president resigned, the impeachment process would be over. Congress had finally decided: impeaching a private citizen was going too far.

Would it be going too far this time??

Here, I had to find it again. I am sorry, I remembered incorrectly, it was YouGov and not Pew. Still a fairly decent polling center.

Right, but which Republican wants to be seen holding the knife? They already have colder feet than last night.

Fair point.

Mitt maybe??

hahaha

Dems can’t do that. Even if some want to. The NRA has been weakened, but still owns the GOP. But there is strong public consensus around improving gun control and I hope the Dems at least make a run at that.

Congress looked quite scared when MAGA shooters came in. And Congress at least had security to protect them. Ordinary citizens don’t. I hope Congress realizes the dangers of gun violence, but I doubt it. They didn’t sadly with Giffords or Sandy Hook. I don’t think they will now. Back to trial by combat.

Dunno, you’re better placed than me for sure, but some shit is gonna spin out of yesterday. Especially if the GOP start waving the confederate flag around again.

I’ve long thought this is going the way of Al Capone, who ended up getting done on tax. It would be sort of fitting, as Trump acts very much like a mob boss.

I’m of the view that if an impeachment can stop his rise again for 2024 (though all those cheeseburgers might do that) then it would be worth it. The downside might be more unrest, and a lack of focus on Biden’s agenda. Then again, maybe the agenda might mean to put this dog to [political] death.

I think, sadly, that even though unrest may be a logical consequence, long term, it is important to still use the impeachment when something is truly worth impeaching for. Because the consequences of not impeaching means that impeachment will no longer actually have moral and ethical meaning.
But that’s my view. I understand the fears though and respect them.

When viewing the American discussions, it is important to note the distinction between impeachment and the trial process.

Trump has already been impeached once, as was Clinton. The House has the power to do that. Conviction in a Senate trial is necessary for removal from office. It is quite possible the House will be summoned back to vote on articles of impeachment, maybe even over the weekend.

House Sergeant at Arms has resigned.

Capitol Chief of Police has not even called Pelosi. Dead man walking.

edit: Schumer saying as Senate Majority leader, he will fire the Senate Sergeant.

I’ve no idea on this but I heard today that if he’s impeached it shuts off any avenue for him trying to get elected again. Although I’m sure a jail term would achieve the same goal.

Sorry I’m struggling to keep up with this thread. It’s moving faster than @SBYM in a chocolate digestive factory

Someone also said that an impeachment means his pardons are, or can be, invalidated. I have no idea how true that is though.

This is a bit of a light hearted explanation by Mr. Nichols since he is using pop culture to reach people. But I want to share it with you. It is twitter, so he is using short sentences of course and can’t cover everything but it is important to note how serious this is and that is what he is attempting to explain. Obviously, it also contains his personal opinions.

It is worth a read by everyone I think personally:

Yes it does, thats the double whammy of it. Even if I think its overkill, he’ll never get near office again after the system is done with him over this. Im hearing lots of incitement rhetoric.

Haven’t read the whole thread since what happened yesterday, but does anyone else think the casting of the most hardcore Trump ‘supporters’ is somewhat unimaginative? I mean they all look exactly like you think they would look.

So true…

We are watching an impossible D-class movie. But what can you do when the world and the US has gone insane.
Prior to 2016, I would have said this was, almost, as likely as current events today:
