Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

Gives you the potty?

my first thought was that the Republican stance towards Trump moved because they felt the storming of the Capitol was a step too far. It will be interesting to see what more comes out in following weeks.

I’m also curious how the Republican voters/support think of these events. Presumably many of them will have been turned off by this?

It actually seems like when he gets over the second barrier to the sides(scene starts at the fences at the base of the capital steps, which was the 2nd or 3rd line of fences erected), he is actually in a very different crowd of people, which makes sense when I think about it. There were multiple lines of fences in front of the Capitol steps, but only one line along the sides. So you could be on the Mall to the sides just in front of the steps, and actually just be protesting. People who had forced at least one fence line were already doing more than protesting, where the people he ends up with (i.e. the guy who holds his camera carefully) were in an allowed area for simple protest.

And the protesters came within 40 metres :eyes: of slaying all of the Democrat Representatives and a successful coup. Such a close shave!

Just sayin’, most of us would not enjoy being manhandled by an angry mob in site of a gallows they erected…

There was a poll posted above with that very figure.

Something like 1:20 of ALL americans were in favour of it, 45% of all Republican voters

(sorry if I’ve got the numbers wrong, I’m quoting from a Friday feeble memory)

@Flobs

I would like to add that I posted already another video yesterday, in which a German TV team got attacked and their equipment got completely destroyed.

That’s why I find this discussion weird to say at least.

In the coming decades, for so many of the little rituals of the presidency that have played out over the past four years, historians are gonna look back and just scratch their heads trying to work out what the actual fuck was going on…

Hangman meme notwithstanding.

The whole plane of what is happening is dangerous, with both sides chronically polarised. Im not trying to water anything down, Im trying to inject pragmatism, into what has emerged into seeming hysteria.

I dont share your fundamental philosophy about politics and justice; justice precedes politics, as does truth. We seem to have lost truth, as both Lyotard and Baudrillard predicted we would. But I am equally concerned about the political landscape we have both far right and far left, and come from the centre ground. I think something nasty is going to happen regardless of how this plays out, because all common sense has been ejected from the debate. Some critical awareness would not be remiss at this time, but alas, the madness is emerging into an acceptable fervor.

Nor do I think Trump or trumpism will emerge from these ashes, it is ruined as a political force. A far right version may resurge under a new guise, but Trump is effectively finished. But does this not mirror the far left.

I disagree about who instigates violence, it is indispensably relevant, especially when presented in political cameo, and where filming commences in mid flight.

It is not the only reason why I find it weird.

How is it the end of Trump or Trumpism? His supporters are in denial about the election, a majority of Republicans think it was ok to ransack the Capitol, his acolytes are still defending him. They think it was some kind of Boston Tea Party. They aren’t going anywhere and they will commit such acts again. Next time it will be worse.

I think they are going to be rooted out and watered down in what follows from this for Trump; he is politically ruined and only enjoys support from the margins. I never took him seriously anyway; he was at all times completely out of his depth. I suppose it comes to this, how do you come back from yesterday and what will ensue from it? I dont think it is possible.

It depends what the new Government does. If they had different colour skin they would be treated as a radicalised domestic terrorism threat. That’s what needs to happen now.

I’ve been a reds fan for 51 years and that’s the end of that discussion.

However, this season I can’t summon any enthusiasm for the FA cup with our squad in tatters and the situation at large. The US is not going to somehow return to calm in two weeks, months, or probably years. The country is more divided than at any time I can remember, and there are tens of millions who believe that the most recent election was a fraud. That is not going away.
