Not sure about that tbh. I’m a member of the odd Facebook group which are extremely useful. For example for advice and information on a medical condition, the photography I do but I do concede that I have seen how easily these groups can slide into something else if they aren’t actively managed.

Discussion groups are the good part of internet. This site here is an example of that. Exchanging informations, opinions without any agenda behind it.
Twitter and facebook however have only one goal: to drive you towards their platforms as much as possible, out of economic interests and in order to create a virtual profile of you, as precise as possible, which will then be sold to whomever wants it. If that includes providing links to fake news, they’ll do it without hesitation.
That’s how people get trapped into alternative views in terms of politics, socio-economics etc. These platforms contain an automated process which drives towards you anything you are interested in. If you look out for right-wing policy for instance, you’ll then be offered more and more links related with that, including all the fake news. Google have the same problem, they should be shut down too imo, or at least, cut in several manageable pieces and then heavily regulated.
There is no filter at all, because the only filter is how to keep you interested and trapped into their net. That’s why they need to be shut down completely imo. There are many other platforms with the same qualities, but guaranteeing the protection of your personal data. It’s just that they are far less known because those giants crush them with their power and money.
By the way, WhatsApp, which was until now guaranteeing an encryption of all messages, have now changed their terms and conditions. Everything you write on there will now be stored by facebook, and used by them (ie. sold) as they wish. Time to find another platform to discuss with family and friends, at least for me.

I cant disagree with any of that. Perhaps more regulation on these algorithms is a good compromise?

Yeah, but how long will it take, and won’t they always find a way around the regulations? I honestly don’t know…
For me, the best regulation in a democracy is to prohibit any collection of personal data. End of.
Applying that regulation effectively means the end of google, facebook and twitter as we know them, and it would be a good thing.
