Very satisfying seeing them all get sentenced. Doesn’t right other wrongs but this was a straight up lynching and sending them all to prison for the rest of their lives was the only choice in a functioning society.

In my opinion, Trump is the failed Tin Pot dictator along with possibly Kim Jong-un (who comes close to Tin Pot). Vladimir and Xi are professionals and serious people seeking to advance what they view as the strategic power of their respective states. Trump is pretty much the definition of Banana Republic dictator, only on crack that is so strong that it suspends reality.
I cannot really categorise Trump properly. He is off the charts silly and an insult to Western culture and far from a serious man, as he is only interested in personal power and gives fuck all to any advancements of US interests.
My opinion only.

I don’t know much about the sons, they always seemed like idiots to me. I thought Kuschner was the powerful one in that generation.
Is Don Jr positioning himself as the voice of reason, or did he just wimp out? Hopefully it’s the sign of a schism and they start ripping each other to shreds.
I just think he’s thick and sick in the head.

I don’t think he’d be able to spell the word, let alone contemplate the concept.
I think it’s just a rare authentic response, said in what they thought was private, to what they were seeing unfold. Their shock was because they were too dumb to have properly gamed out previously what was likely to happen.
He is not the only sycophant who saw what Jan6 turned into and privately was despairing at what was happening and what Trump needed to do to stop it, and at least distance himself from it, but who then went out an publicly backed Trump to the hilt. Far more troublesome than these texts from Jr, are the ones from Ingram and Hannity, two people who went on air that night and absolved Trump of all responsibility and instead blamed the left.

I think there’s a bit of a rift with the Trump kids. Don Jr sort of assumed he would get the nod from dad, but Ivanka is the darling. Melania hates her. The blonde lad (Eric?) is nondescript, while the other daughter, Tiffany, is persona non-grata.
The two power bases among the kids are Don Jr and Ivanka.
The whole family is toxic and needs to disappear from public life. What happened on January 6th should be enough to put Trump in jail, or at the minimum, hounded out of public life and relegated to a sickening footnote of Republican politics. Instead, it has become some sort of rallying point, along the line of ‘are you with me or against me?’
As best as I can tell I am living in a banana republic, though one with a couple of centuries of civilization and economic growth to disguise that underlying reality for many.

Absolutely. The Atlantic fleshes out what the Republicans are doing to ensure a coup is successful next time. The world is an incredibly depressing and increasingly dangerous place and it feels like we are heading toward a remake of the world akin to that seen in the 1930s and 40s.

I mean, this isn’t even a deterrent. Seems insanely stupid to leak this to the media, as it clearly shows they have…no deterrent to speak of and no strategy to negotiate. I am kind of dumbstruck.
America does not want all out war with Russia over Ukraine.
Arming Ukraine insurgents, assuming Russia invades, will be a way to hurt Russia, while not having American troops on the ground. The idea is it will give Putin something to think about ahead of invading.
I don’t really see a strong American position here, apart from something like that? Assuming they don’t want all out war with Russia.
PS - whatever economic sanctions are possible should also be exerted, as well as continued exclusion from G8. But militarily, I don’t know what America is supposed to do here?
