The Brooks Brothers riot is a straight line to Trump in 2020. It was an astroturfed protest against the hand recounts in Miami-Dade that intimidated election officials into stopping the process. The press covered it as a spontaneous reaction to perceived electoral wrongdoing, treating unsubstantiated feelings about something as sufficient to justify the actions. It was just laundering shitty GOP talking points. Even if it was spontaneous it is still anti-democratic and should have been condemned. However, even after finding out it was asroturfed they treated it as a legitimate political strategy…often talking about it jokingly as just as example of how savvy the GOP is. Even as it became clearer what Trump was intending to do, there was no self-reflection of how their prior treatment of incidents like this created lasting damage to our democracy. The fact it was the same goons who helped trump in 2020 as organized that “riot” is not a coincidence.
Having lived in the USA all my life, I can say that this is the first time I’ve ever seriously considered leaving. The bus the Republican Party has steered its course on seems destined for disaster…and they have no problems with taking everyone else along for the ride.
I’ve known that there have always been racists, white nationalists, and a hateful “Christian” coalition here, but they’ve mainly been relegated to the shadows. Until Trump, that is. He made us safe/cool to be a shitbag blow hard, espousing anything that came to mind, and gave these idiots a forum to get behind, and a figure to follow.
I believe in my heart that most of the people in this country would like them all to go away, but enough of the evil has gotten into positions of power that they are trying to legislate and confiscate that power by any means. This 2022 election cycle will be a large determinate. If the democrats can somehow not lose the majority in Congress, there is hope.
That said, I have talked to the wife about the possibility of moving to the Netherlands (where my extended family is from) if things really take a turn for the worse. And, we have just moved into our retirement dream home on the coast. Unfortunately, in a very red state, South Carolina.

That sounded a bit conspiratorial…yes the major investor who is calling the shots at CNN is a looney fox watcher and Trump mega donor who wants to remake CNN in fox’s image and isnt hiding that. He is culling those the MAGA types view as overly partisan simply because they tell the truth, but this firing wasnt because of this segment. Rather they told him a month ago today would be his last day so he went out with a flourish.
