In China they dont have drug problems because they just execute drug dealers. We need to do the same. Speedy trial…2 days and then execution. problem solved.
Under Biden we’re increasingly become a police state. Like in Communist China. We cannot have that.
So what’s the answer then ? Just throw their hands up in the air , say the game is rigged and settle down to permanent minority rule and a Supreme Court made up of religious zealots ?
We got a funny little pamphlet through about our representative for the state house today. The guy - Democrat incumbent - actually went to school with my wife and knows the family fairly well. He’s just a standard Democrat guy really.
Anyway, we got a letter through that has a picture of a pink haired women shouting and two kids (one black, one white) playing together. Then there is a caption that says “Children don’t see race… until someone teaches them to. CRT teaches hate”.
Then on the back it quotes a person called Aruna Khilanani saying they wanted to kill white people and says that the local politician “WANTS THIS TAUGHT IN PRE-K”.
Found it to be a funny letter, especially bearing in mind how “normal” this politician they are targeting is. Interestingly I thought they had moved on from CRT to talking about transgender now but I guess the senders of this leaflet are still stuck on it.
Is blaming them for what the GOP have done and are doing a solution?
The solutions to avoid these awful outcomes are not easy. But we have to acknowledge the game is handicapped, because of structural reasons (dark money x citizens united, the unbalanced way votes get counted, a corporatist media that launders bad faith GOP talking points) and because of ideological ones (there simply aren’t the avenues available to a party that wants to government to work that are available to a party who wants it to fail). But when you have one party actively trying to take us where we are, and another trying to oppose it while pushing the rock up a hill, it seems facile to blame them when they fail.
CRT never meant what they pretended it meant in the first place. That has allowed it to become a stand-in term boogeyman term for any cause you want to oppose. Once a term like that, like woke, stops meaning anything it comes to mean whatever you need it to mean.
Then they need to start playing these fuckers at their own game instead of bending over for them.
Two years ago , Democrats had the Presidency , the Senate and the House , and Joe Biden spent the next two years talking about the fantasy of bi-partisanship when he should have been getting rid of the filibuster ,been laser focussed on the new voter suppression laws the Republicans were rolling out , and he should also have increased the number of justices on the SC. By the time he got round to looking at those things it was too fucking late.
Fight fire with fire. That’s all these cunts know.
I get the sentiment, but these things are either not the purview of the executive branch, of the federal government at all, or just take time to do. Biden had enormous legislative success in historical terms, but the framing of the process has made the outcome seem like a failure. It’s just a real up is down sort of attitude towards covering this stuff, where any good news is bad for Dems and any bad news is bad news for Dems that totally infect the national narratives that everyone then picks up on.
And I think that is the point. So much of our evaluation of what is happening is based on deep rooted assumptions about who the parties are, what they value and everything is evaluated through that lens. A Republican gets elected president and the market immediately goes up. Not because there is anything about the history of economic policy success but because the vibe means everyone just expects the market to go up so everyone rushes to put money into it and its self-fulfilling. When a Dem is president, the vibe of the country is that immigration is a problem and crime is out of hand, not matter what the data say. That is the issue that Dems need to overcome and you don’t do it with policy, or each candidate standing alone. You do it by collectively addressing their failure as a party, and doing so over and over again until it gets chiseled into the public consciousness.
They are the party that required the last 2 democratic presidents to enact massive economic recovery acts. Why, because they don’t give a shit about any of you, not the people who vote for us and definitely not the people they steal money from to fund their campaigns. They care about making rich people richer even if it tanks the economy. When they are asked a question that has GOP framing today they fall over themselves to demonstrate that they cannot be tarred with that criticism. The answer to a question about defunding the police is not to distance yourself from it, which solidifies the worst interpretation of what the phrase means as being a Dem policy. Immediately go on the attack about how bad policing makes everyone less safe and costs communities money and that the GOP have no desire to address that because they’d rather communities go bankrupt if it allows them to win an election. It goes back to that conversation the other day about policy vs values. Vibes are based on people’s interpretation of the values they think the parties have. The Dems need to hammer the value difference over and over and over again until we get new vibes. Only then can they run campaigns on actual legislation and policy and have it viewed fairly.
I’d resigned myself to them losing both chambers a couple of weeks back. Funnily enough , I was reading a piece which suggested it could actually help Biden (or whoever) in 2024 , much like it did with Obama , and Clinton before. i.e. the electorate will have had two years of seeing what a bunch of useless bastards they are and vote the Democrat President back in.
This would be a completely normal result, given that Dems have only a 5 seat advantage in the House and the Senate is basically even. I think in the last 100 years or so the party of an incoming president has lost House seats in the mid-term election every time but twice, and one of those was W with his big post-911 support.
One actually would expect the Republicans to have a larger than usual night, given the economic uncertainty, even though they surely helped create it.
This - especially when coupled with the fact that as a left leaning moderate I struggle to point to much that Biden has done in two years that struck me as effective leadership.
Getting arms to Ukraine has probably been his best action and even that has felt pretty underwhelming
What this says is that normal results would not be expected of abnormal circumstances. The post 9/11 period was an abnormal period. The election cycle after what the GOP as a whole did after the 2020 election should have been an abnormal period that resulted in an electoral wipe out. Regardless of the final result of this election that is no happening, and that will be a shameful mark on this country.
Since it’s Mid-Term, too many Dem voters will probably not show up i fear. So I am mentally prepared for the utter disaster it will be if the party of Trump wins control or can contest control of the Congress.
Because those Red voters are utterly loyal and will stand in 1 km lines to vote if they have to (yes, I know gerrimandering and supression is a very large and legitimate problem and much will be written and discussed about it once again, but so is voter resilience in my view.).
Fucking nightmare. The United States is bonkers. I want to say something about no longer being a Western country, but it would be a wordy digression so I won’t.
Valid point on whacky Republican election denying and Trump’s shenanigans. Dems are also carrying some baggage. They clung to COVID controls for far too long IMO. Turned a lot of folks off and played into the old argument that Dems are all about government controlling our lives (fairly or unfairly).
That final $2T in COVID spending was all them, too. Some argue it was the last straw in causing inflation. I think US debt is $8T higher than just before the pandemic so that $2T is 25% of the overall increase.
I do also think the Democrats have been fairly accused as being soft on crime. That one is sticking to them.
