Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

I’ve got a gun because my neighbour’s got a gun. The sheriff’s got a gun because I’ve got a gun, my neighbour’s got a gun because the sheriff’s got a gun.

Gun manufacturers are laughing though.

So I was watching MSNBC, I think, on YT the other day, and some expert was saying there are now 415,000,000 guns in the US.

Holy fucking shitballs.

Yeah, significantly more than there are people. Yet only about 30% of the adult population are gun owners, so only about 60 million. That means the average gun owner owns 7 gun. It belies the argument that gun ownership is for self-defense, because even accounting for the rightward skew of the distribution, it means the gun owner who has one gun for self defense is a rarity.

Katie Porter has announced she is running for Fienstein’s Senate seat in the 2024 elections. Presumably she will have a clear shot at it and will force DFien to stand down, but it does mean her borderline seat in the house is now even more jeopardy with a lesser known candidate (lesser in general) to campaign for it.

For those who have asked themselves what exactly the Hunter Laptop story is, this is a pretty good break down from former FBI Counterintelligence agent, Asha Rangapa

In short. It is known that a cache of the files related to Burisma were previously hacked by the Russians. In the absence of confirmation that the laptop is actually Hunter’s (still contested by Hunter’s team) it is possible the rest of the files were also obtained by hacking with the laptop just being a front to explain how they were obtained. Even if the laptop was his and the files from it were actually pulled, there is strong evidence that at least some files in the collection are fake, created by Russians, with the messy chain of custody making it very difficult to tell which is which.

Even assuming the evidence against Hunter can be verified and a case can be made against him personally, there is nothing actually connecting this to Biden’s performance of his role as VP justifying it being a political scandal. Instead there is substantial information that everything Biden did regarding Ukraine was simply as the mouthpiece of a collective whole of government approach.

The associated claims then about political interference in coverage of the above scandal is described as a tantrum in response to the above scandal never getting traction.

In any case wasn’t the original point completely nonsensical?

If I recall correctly it revolved around the US government pushing for a government prosecutor to be removed. In the minds of the cultists, it was Big Dog protecting whatever childish nickname they had for Hunter. In reality it was the complete opposite, that the main complaint was that the prosecutor wasn’t actually clamping down on the corruption going on.

That is right. The investigation pre-dated Hunter’s role at Burisma and was going no where. The complaint was that the person leading it was compromised and needed to be replaced by someone who would be more serious on taking on corruption.

Hunter laptop story, very simplified, is who he did cocaine with and which whores he fucked. Also he did very unwise and cynical, probably quite unethical, bussiness with oligarchs in Ukraine, but which was probably technically legal (I remember thinking it was very shady when i read about it back in 2014, long before I joined this forum, I followed Ukraine at Maidan and Donbas hostilities). Its not very relevant for National Security of the US regardless of what MAGA claims. Also Biden himself has not done anything wrong as far as I know in regards ro helping his son regarding Ukraine.

The answer to a 6 year old bringing a gun to school and shooting a teacher?

More police in schools and harsher penalties for the kids

These people are deranged.

He’s talking about Scott Perry but cannot name him due to house rules about criticizing other members on the floor. There is a line of thought that Perry’s reelection, not Trump’s declaration he was running again, is what prompted Garland to appoint the new special counsel.

Do the insurrectionists seriously think that the DOJ are just going to allow them a window into their investigations ? Surely this will be fought tooth and nail , and presumably laughed out of court.

Sorry, it’s not hahaha funny…

That is the dark laugh of someone who cannot quite believe what he is seeing.

The comparison is perhaps overused, but it is genuinely startling how similar Congress now is to the Congresses of the 1850s. Current events read like something out of ‘The Field of Blood’, the Freeman book about violence in Congress on the road to the CIvil War. The incidents we are seeing now would not be extremes, but nor would they be out of place.

Also see Cruz responding to the (unsupported) claims of election irregularity in the last presidential election by citing the 1877 Election Commission as a model for how this (fake) dispute could be resolved. He ignored that the commission came to its decision with the Tilden-Hayes compromise, one of the darkest, most racists moments in US congressional history that saw the promises of reconstruction wiped out in a backroom deal.

For something a bit “sunnier”, from the Santos world of the alternative…

“Unfortunately on the 9th of March I became symptomatic with what we all know now very well, COVID-19 a.k.a coronavirus, commonly known as the Chinese flu,” he said. “On the 11th I ended up in the hospital. It was really bad, fever, body aches.”

It’s like you couldn’t make it up. Is he even a real person? It’s like some college students came up with the most outlandish personality traits with clearly identifiable lies to destroy credibility and programed them into a robot to see see how far it could get in politics.

p.s. in many ways this has already been done (i.e. “the Donald” in a more serendipitous way) and points to the the power of the GOP machinery and process…

I hadn’t heard until today that the chubby jew-ish guy has claimed to also be a volleyball champion.

Makes perfect sense.

I was just saying to the missus ; ‘How did this conman rise through the party and become candidate and then congressman ?’

Then I read about how his local party was now calling for him to resign , and my question was answered ;

"Mr. Cairo was among roughly 30 local and federal Republicans who attended the news conference to castigate Mr. Santos and call for his resignation. The Nassau Republican Committee confirmed that it had refunded the more than $120,000 that Mr. Santos had given to the county committee.

Feb 14-16, 2020 in Seattle WA over Valentine’s Day weekend. I was sick as a dog for weeks after and felt like shit for months. Probably infected all of Planet Java on the 15th. There was no testing at the time so I had know way of knowing for sure if I had it, but I betcha I could have been patient zero there.

By all accounts, the heads of the NRCC (the body responsible for managing the overall House election strategy and helping candidates get elected) understood the issues with him, but decided that it wasnt worth dealing with as he was running in a Biden +10 district and was on track to get beaten badly. They just treated him like he wasnt there, concentrated on races they thought there was more upside to concentrating on and just assumed he’d lose and then be forced to slink away.

I dont know what sort of backbone they would have shown had they believed he could have won and then embarrassed them the way he has, but it does appear that most of this can be explained by everyone just believing he was a candidate who couldnt win and so wasnt worth putting any energy into.
