Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

She says something good.

As a Christian person, I absolutely do not feel any sense of kinship with many of the evangelicals in the Trump orbit. The Jesus they champion is not the Jesus of the gospels, and it is a fair take to say that they have hijacked him for their own purposes.

A new form of nationalism has taken hold, and the smattering of Jesus that is blended into the mix is not really representative of who he was, or the message he brought.

One frustrating aspect of that, to me at least, is that in any discussion of matters of faith, these people are taken as credible representatives, and I’m afraid I can’t defend them, because I do not recognize the gospel they proclaim, or the values they espouse.

It must be extremely frustrating for you and others who believe in the loving New Testament Jesus.
I have yet to hear how Evangelicals explain Jesus’s teachings on humility and tolerance in relation to their own hateful message. Do you know their stance on this?

The recent death of Pat Robertson should bring this into focus. Some of the obits have basically yada yada yadaed past the controversy, but some of them have really focused in on the overt politicization of his movement from even before it began - his father was a congressman and that led it to be him who was handpicked by a special interest conservative group to create a political evangelical movement to advance their agenda.

The deep dives into Q anon have also clearly revealed the tendency towards conspiratorial thinking that is common among evengelicals. Fantasyland by Kurt Anderson is a bit of a long winded but good review of the long history of such evangelical conspiratorial thinking that has defined much of America’s path since before its founding.

Yeah, well said…the ‘vengeful Jesus’…

FMD

As well as being one of the youngest and least experienced nominees to become a federal judge , accused of showing bias in support of Trump , having a conservative appeals court overrule her for misreading the law and having no jurisdiction to interfere in the FBI documents investigation , Judge Aileen Cannon has actually sat as a trial judge in only four cases for a grand total of fourteen days.

What could possibly go wrong ?

Who was the guy recently who said “You know who wasnt about forgiveness? Jesus”

Surely this crossed a line? Calling Biden, the sitting US president, a “wannabe dictator”. How can they get away with this!

Anyone thinking this whole ‘Biden Crime Family’ narrative being pushed by Trump and his lickspittles in Congress is beyond belief probably won’t be surprised to discover that good 'ol Rudy is ,once again , behind it all , and , once again , it’s all patent nonsense.

I’ve had a look and can’t find it!

I tried googling to find the exact quote, but google is shit now so it would give me unrelated results from the last 2 days, then in a fit of anger it came to me - Bennjy Johnson, one of Charlie Kirk’s idiots.

The quote was “go and read your gospels. Let me tell you someone who wasnt tolerant. Christ” in response to a christian chicken sandwich company hiring a head of DEI.

lol’ing at ‘one of Charlie Kirk’s idiots’…

We had a bank holiday in the US yesterday for Juneteenth. This is a day commemorates the last slaves being made aware of the emancipation proclamation, over 2 years after it was issued. This year was the first year it was observed as a federal bank holiday.

Courts in Texas didnt observe it and continued working.

How racist do you have to be to refuse a bank holiday on principle?

Weirdly, Texas was the first state to proclaim (1938) and the first to make it a state holiday (1980), and it commemorates a Texas event.

The details are much less juicy than the headlines.

Of them not emancipating their slaves, so in that sense this was completely on brand for them :joy:

Aye, it also appears the sentence is harsher than is typical for these charges, and so while we might debate if that is because it’s a political prosecution from a “Trump judge” or a recognition of the political sensitives of the case making them extra cautious about not allowing him to be seen as getting preferential treatment, it is still being treated by the GOP as if it was a sweetheart deal for him.

Possibly the dumbest take imaginable

People dont take Climate Change seriously enough because the scientists havent been clear enough.

Yeah, this sort of response is clearly the result of people just not being aware that science thinks its a problem and not because of a conscious partisan treatment of the issue funded by special interests group making them think its a hoax
