The thing that seemed apparent from Menendez’s original indictment have now been charged - acting as an agent of a foreign country. FARA charges are notoriously hard to get convictions on, but I dont know how that specific law pertains to senators. It seems notable to me that the charge does not include the word “unregistered” as is the case in basic FARA charges so I wonder if this is a slightly different (and easier) charge?

Elsie Stefanik referenced Jordan’s prowess on the wrestling mat to support his leadership claim. This for a man who has been credibly accused, by multiple people under oath, of knowingly abetting long standing sexual abuse of students by the team doctor while working as a wrestling coach. Her comments were met with audible gasps from people in the chamber.

I don’t know what she was trying to achieve. She might credibly play a dumb person, but she is not one. She knows the accusations. Republicans are pretending to not be aware of them as they are not some secret unreported on issue. She understands how credible they are. I can only think she made this comment to troll Democrats. Which sounds insane, but seems par for the course
Her whole career trajectory has been insane , she was highly regarded and widely respected at one time. Alas , like so many others she decided to hitch her wagon to the MAGA train … and look where it got her in no time at all.
Yeah, that’s what I mean by us knowing she isnt stupid. When she was elected in 2014 she was the figurehead for those who gush about bipartisan cooperation…an honest throw back republican who if she had it her way Romney would have just run a “traditional conservative campaign” without having to veer off into what we can see in retrospect was proto-MAGA territory. I think there is something incredibly dishonest about that sort of framing because that throw back conservative ideology is still heavily influenced by racism, its just a genteel form of it. But I understood the point. She was in office barely 12 month before she burned those ships.

The answer to the Jim Jordan/wrestling comment is simple. Republicans dont take sexual assault seriously. Its either a joke or a political football to use against the LGBTQ+ community but never a serious topic.
