Szoboszlai has a certain “playboy” quality, for lack of a better word, that might rub a lot of Liverpool fans the wrong way - plus some of his comments and antics towards fans last season when the team were in a rut. This is why it’s understandable, to me at least, why people wouldn’t consider him captain material.
That said, while I’m not sure you can learn Henderson’s humility and motivational qualities, if he’s leading on the pitch like Stevie did, he could be a good captain by example in the future. In terms of numbers and application on the pitch, last two seasons should be the blueprint he has to follow.
I don’t want a new version of the spice boys to emerge at this club. This guy isn’t serious enough for the captaincy imo. Ok, he’s still young indeed, but right now, it’s a big no from me.
Handing the vice-captaincy to Alli is the obvious choice at this moment in time.
Not sure that would be a good idea. Both Virgil and Alli have their contracts expiring next summer and given their ages I’m not sure whether the club will be offering either of them a new one.
Good point. When those two depart, we’ll be awfully short on genuine leadership material.
I’d still hand it to Allison for the time being , in the hope that some of the younger guys will emerge as credible candidates during this coming season.
from the outside looking in, I would probably pick Curtis for at least the vice captain role if he were to extend his contract. A local lad who sounds like he wants to carry more responsibility.
I’m pretty sure nothing Szobo did or said so far, from what we know, blocks him from being a serious candidate to be a future captain. Like him as a player/character or not. Nothing of the “try to be like Beckham” stuff blocks it, it’s totally irrelevant. That’s more fan stuff.
But that’s a total non-topic for me right now, we first have to see how the teams forms itself under Iraola, who are the protagonists, etc.
Things can change very quickly in football, players can move, new players and leaders can emerge. We’ll deal with it when we get there.
Oh the vice captaincy yeah, it’s not a big surprise if Szobo is the vice captain or one of a few options. Alisson could be the one though, we’ll see. I was referring to who the next captain would be. We’ll see when that is and who is the best option.
