Watch some tapes of Gerrard playing #10, Szobo, and think of your answer again.

Sprints, shots and dead ball situations = Szobo.

He did!

If we play him it needs to be as the most advanced midfielder running around as he does and shooting. He won´t create much for our attack but he´ll score a few and overall with Mac and Nyoni/Grav just behind him we would be more solid. Wirtz out the team for this of course.

Not what I would do, but it´s the best set up for Szobo, if we think he´s the star of the show.

It would mean him playing back to goal quite a bit and needing to turn. He could press well, that’s true. His numbers and creativity wasn’t great in 24/25 from that position. It was near the end of that season when he told Slot he would prefer playing deeper than that. He would probably prefer the RCM #8 role in a 4-3-3.

Yes could do that too. basically the midfielder that gets forward. I didnt necessarily mean as a 10.

But not the guy who is keeping things tight.

Basically he´s running forward and shooting or crossing. No subtlety.

Thats why he is so frustrating, he can disappear for long periods of time, become clueless and irrelevant and then out of nowhere comes up with a goal like that. I like to call him a slightly better version of Luis Garcia, players that can come up with a moment of genius but then disappear for extended periods of time in the game. And that is frustrating because you can obviously see ‘world class’ somewhere in Dom but he is just not getting there. Last season, he was our best player despite a really bad season for the team and I thought maybe with a new coach, he can move a big level up and become one of our onfield leaders but that has not happened, yet. Its early days but I really hope he can make himself so relevant that it is impossible to leave him out.

Does anyone else think our pressing game got a bit disorganised when he and Gravenberch were introduced last night? I’m afraid that one of them will pay the price for not being a good stylistic fit with the rest of the team (assuming that Iraola will do everything in his power to make the most out of Wirtz). It was a mixed Tottenham team at Anfield in League Cup but the midfield looked so much better organised when Nyoni and Mac Allister were anchoring it.

That said, Szoboszlai’s goal… Woof!

Our best period was the 20 or so minutes after halftime, everything was purring especially the press and our worst period was after subbing on Grav and Szob.

Not only did the press evaporate but so did our control in possession, some very sloppy giveaways and without Mama, they could have equalised and pulled in front.

I think he is a bit of a highlights player. I don´t mean that in that he is just looking for glory.

He´s not very good at the nitty gritty of midfield play, but he has a world class shot on him and a very good cross and so, with his energy to get into attacking positions, he can deliver very good moments without consistently impacting the flow of the game. Basically he offers running and goals but little else.

Goals are obviously very valuable so it´s a question of if his moments are enough and could they become more frequent.

He arrived with a bit of an undefined role having moved around a lot of the RB clubs and often in teams playing in a way that have roles that dont easily translate into what we were trying to do under Klopp or are now. But it was stylistically more of a forward like role than a mid, but still with traits that made the transition into the way Klopp used him a fairly natural one. One that still made use of his strengths and minimized the downside of his weaknesses - a Stevie like insistence on making things happen right now that results in a lot of lost possession. Our game accommodated that if it was happening in the right areas, the ones he was generally playing, and he came with a reputation of working his balls to win it back, which he has lived up to.

This transition this season is much bigger because it doesn’t just ask more from him, it limits his opportunities to play on those outrageous physical strengths. Thankfully he seems to embrace it so its not being done against his will. For me though its less that Im not confident he has the tools to adapt, but that I dont think its actually in anyone’s interests to ask him to do it.

Under Klopp he started off playing in the inside channel on the right almost like a winger and looked the part and really great.
As his position changed he looked a lot less natural however remained pretty useful.
He’s still a useful player and any manager would love a player with his engine. He just needs to tidy things up a bit and make better decisions.

Are all his goals screamers?

In the league he doesn’t score very many 16 in 109 appearances. He does a lot better in cups.
He’s scored some nice free kicks which were pretty much screamers.
