Another angle could be to get corporates to sponsor the cost of replanting as part of every big corporate csr or green program instead of tax money?

There could be a million and one reasons for that additional 100k. What age were the oldest trees cut? Do we assume that all 200 trees were like those newly planted trees pictured in the article? The value of trees is going to increase with age so if there are far more established trees destroyed, not only will they cost an immense figure to replace, but will also take a lot of work removing stumps and replanting, and in all likelihood will need to be re-sited and therefore perhaps some design changes to the park. Is there access to crane in larger trees or will that be a logistical problem since the planting project was complete, knowing that pathways were likely put in after tree establishment? There could be issues with avoiding those exposed aggregate paths that likely werenā€™t designed for heavy vehicle use? Will that also mean further design work?

Iā€™m not going to go search for initial documents on the park design, what was planted etc, but I just want to say it might not be as simple as plugging a plant price in and saying ā€˜replace A with A and thatā€™s the final costā€™. It could be more complex than you or I think. Unless you work for the council you likely wonā€™t know what the costs for that work is.

i wouldnt

too much work for a brainless vandalā€¦not saying its impossible, but 200 trees at various areas in the same municipality, done late on the same night?..

just doesnt feel like an opurtunistic effort of mindless vandalismā€¦

if it were 10 trees, in the same parkā€¦id say vandalism would be the most likely causeā€¦

they wont be replacing established trees with sameā€¦and if they did, now THAT would be a massive waste of public fundsā€¦

even if you had to spend a week with an excavator and greenwaste truck, removing stumps, i still cant see the value rising to 200kā€¦

thats the point though reallyā€¦if you want to imagine it costing 200k, try and justify it, and spent 200k on ratepayers money to do soā€¦i reckon you couldā€¦but if you wanted a contractor to plant 200 trees and remove 200 vandalised young trees (which is what the images refer to-lets face it if it was a 200 year old significant gum, that would be the lead photoā€¦but i am willing to agree im leading with an assumption) im certain it could be done for less

but i digress, whoever did this should be forced to answer for the crimes to public property, and the mentioned cost isnt certified or worth going further intoā€¦i was just making a remarkā€¦

It would certainly help!

Good to see it is always Aussies doing the research that matters.

Itā€™s a headline in New Scientist too. Itā€™s more important stuff (like last weekā€™s Cockatoo news) that shows Australia is clearly the centre of all that is good and great in the world. Canā€™t think of any newsy thing over the next week that could knock Straya off the front page.

Still laughing at the statement two posts up.

Sooo, Alan Jones hey? Growing up I despised him, and John Laws. Iā€™m hardly surprised.

From the Guardian:

ā€œHis radio career was marked by controversies, including comments that the prime minister Julia Gillard had lied and that her late father had ā€œdied of shameā€ as a result. In 2019 he also made comments about the New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern, saying someone should ā€œshove a sockā€ down her throat.ā€

Charming!

No surprise with Jones. They have been looking for the smoking gun for decades and now it looks like they have it. Top lawyers will probably drag it out until the pervert dies.

The book Jonestown was great. Lots of careful insinuations re his behaviour but clearly thought he was bulletproof with his sway and power. He even got away with the London toilet episode.

On the other hand he was a seriously good speaker and motivator and did wonders for charity etc but that doesnā€™t change the fact he is a pervert.

And I sat next to him on a plane a few years ago (true). He was a fuckwit without even trying to touch me up.

A happier article:

Just around the corner from us. I was on that corner a couple of hours before the incident.

Danger seems to be following you. Shouldnā€™t you get your arse back to Liverpool for that Christmas do you are hosting? You have an interesting enough life story without following around every shooting around the mean eastern suburbs of Sydney.

The notable thing is that the area is such an unlikely scene for an incident like this.
Of course Iā€™ll be back for my event. Please come along and buy my merch.

Iā€™m not so sure. Plenty of contract killings in the mean eastern subs. I lived two doors down from one shooting - man gunned down on his driveway in Bellevue Hill. It wasnā€™t even made a big deal of at the time and there has long been a sense that illegal money is welcome.

Weā€™re not really the ES. It was at the end of Crown St, Surry Hills, an area known for gays and gourmands.
The shooter probably flounced off to a Michelin starred restaurant, where heā€™s hiding out eating lobster with his fabulous friends.

Yeah, nah itā€™ll be gang related. Youā€™d be safer back at the Christmas party, Craig

Still not as interesting as Phil Nevilleā€™s.

Think his grandparents may have the more interesting story. They named their son ā€˜nevilleā€™ FFS so must have been through some fucked up weird shit.
