Complete opposite to left wing Albo so we are faced with extremes.

Albo is starting to struggle and prepare for life post politics in the waterfront. Don’t blame him.

But Dutton is no chance. Albo will be re elected with a reduced majority before eventually fucking off before the following election after being knifed internally (arch rival Plebisek) when the polls get worse.

He heads to a life of riches on Boards and
other jobs for the boys like most pollies.

As I would too.

Apart from the house, are there other signs? If not, it’s kind of normal for a wealthy person to buy a house with their fianceé isn’t it? It seems like this narrative pushed by LNP about “Albo preparing for retirement” is sticking.

Of course there may be other factors. I admit I follow US and UK politics more than the local, just because it’s a bit more interesting.

Not Australian, and only a casual observer, but is he a left-wing extremist the way that Dutton is?

That’s definitely true. It seems Albo’s life is very money-centric

Of course not. Just like Starmer and Harris aren’t.

He is not. He’s nominally part of the ‘Labor left’ and earlier in his career this would be have been true of some of his stances but since becoming leader of the opposition he’s been centrist and now if anything really aligns with the right of Labor which occupies the centre right area of politics.

He must have gone to Political Chameleon school with Truss.

He’s not in that league, thank fuck.

Isn’t that how it traditionally goes?

Start off energising base voters to get control of the party, then move to wherever the prevailing political centre of the country is to get elected in government?

In this case at least: Yeah, nah

Left wing extreme here is the Greens. Right wing extreme is One Nation. But Dutton and Albo are certainly opposites.

Police hunt vandals after nearly 200 trees and shrubs destroyed

Story by Tim Jones, news reporter

Police in Australia are hunting for vandals who have destroyed nearly 200 trees and shrubs, including some “very rare” species.

Some of the trees were sawed off at the base.

The plants were either ripped out of the ground or snapped or cut at the base with a hand saw, according to Glen Eira City Council, a suburb in the southeast of Melbourne.

The council said in a statement it was “extremely disappointed and disgusted at the deliberate acts of vandalism” at eight parks and reserves.

It added that police in the state of Victoria are investigating.

“Some of these trees are very rare and may not be able to be replaced, including the Red Gums at Boyd Park which were grown from seeds,” the council said.

Local residents described the destruction as “senseless”, “devastating” and “heartbreaking” via the council’s Facebook page.

One person added: “So bewildering as to why people would do this!”

Some also reacted to the news by offering to volunteer to help plant replacements.

The council said the vandalism would cost taxpayers thousands of Australian dollars.

It said: "Each tree is valued at around $700 (£354) cost to purchase, plant and establish with a combined cost of $80,000 (£40,520).

“Further costs for repair and replanting of the locations result in the total cost of this vandalism to nearly $200,000 (£101,300).”

Officials pointed out the maximum sentence for criminal damage is 10 years in jail or a fine of up to $218,000 (£110,417).

That’s why I said I don’t blame him. Personally I think our PM should be paid more, buy a waterfront and sit in seat 1a.

And the preparing for retirement is opposition scare tactic 101. Labor said it about Howard etc.

And when I said struggling I meant the polls. Dutton is closing but won’t be good enough.

disgusting act, hope they catch the culprits…little side point though to revert back to the council discussion held earlier;

  1. x 200 trees is 1k a tree, alot of them are next to each other…im not sure what the extra 120k is for if the procurement and planting costs are 80k
  2. growing a redgum from seed? is that really the local council remit?
  3. a native tree does not cost $700. this kind of stuff really cuts deep.

the trees need to be replaced and yes there is a cost involved, but i wouldnt mind that contract myself to be honest.

just an edited note, i have visited my local indigeanous flora nursery, its mainly ground covers and seedlings run by volunteers, one of the good things council does to assist locals with education and replanting of correct species, but even if it did exist for the purpose of replanting these type of situations, its not a cost you can attribute to the above act…its an ongoing cost incurred regardless.

Go fill ya boots Rb :0)

Think they referring to the fact they they are back to square one… if no insurance is to be paid for damage, the vandalism has doubled the initial cost - They mention 'purchase, plant, and establish’ - which I took to mean as future maintenance for the years to come… However they have come to those figures though, the higher they can amass the total, the likelihood of a stiffer punishment to the culprits, which can’t be a bad thing eh

good point re the escalated cost and the punishment…although i cant see if they do get the culprits anyone would rely on these early estimates…surely these would need to be verified? regardless, its still a good point…there is always an angle you cant see at first glance…

also, regarding maintenance, that is not an ‘extra’ cost, they were saplings, maintenance didn’t just increase, it remains… also establishment and maintenance should be reasonably minimal as they are natives.

anyhoo…lets hope they catch the pricks who did this…id love to know what thier disgruntlement over a few trees is, could range from pure stupidity, to a protest about the use of public parkland, to a disgruntled contractor, or even unpaid supplier…i wont lose too much sleep over it, but would be interesting…its happened over a few parks, so its hard to imagine its just one or two bored kids on the way home from school

I’d put my money on brainless vandalism.

Another angle could be to get corporates to sponsor the cost of replanting as part of every big corporate csr or green program instead of tax money?

There could be a million and one reasons for that additional 100k. What age were the oldest trees cut? Do we assume that all 200 trees were like those newly planted trees pictured in the article? The value of trees is going to increase with age so if there are far more established trees destroyed, not only will they cost an immense figure to replace, but will also take a lot of work removing stumps and replanting, and in all likelihood will need to be re-sited and therefore perhaps some design changes to the park. Is there access to crane in larger trees or will that be a logistical problem since the planting project was complete, knowing that pathways were likely put in after tree establishment? There could be issues with avoiding those exposed aggregate paths that likely weren’t designed for heavy vehicle use? Will that also mean further design work?

I’m not going to go search for initial documents on the park design, what was planted etc, but I just want to say it might not be as simple as plugging a plant price in and saying ‘replace A with A and that’s the final cost’. It could be more complex than you or I think. Unless you work for the council you likely won’t know what the costs for that work is.

i wouldnt

too much work for a brainless vandal…not saying its impossible, but 200 trees at various areas in the same municipality, done late on the same night?..

just doesnt feel like an opurtunistic effort of mindless vandalism…

if it were 10 trees, in the same park…id say vandalism would be the most likely cause…
