Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 2)

Trumps not a Nazi
Nazis actually spent on public infrastructure

So now Trump is threatening 100% tariffs on BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) if they attempt to develop a shared reserve/trade currency. Not a new threat, but timing is everything.

The idea itself is actually overcomplicating something that is likely to happen anyway. China alone could simply push the yuan further into the global market with its current power, and a few institutional reforms would make it globally far more appealing. A shared currency would presumably be more palatable to Indian national pride, and maybe Russian.

Chickenshit kicking the can to March 1st. for those eagerly anticipated tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Guess they didn’t blink.

Anecdotally, a lot of people seem to be taking steps to prepare for a trade war with the US, a month’s notice just provides lead time. I know quite a few people putting their Florida property up for sale, and making plans to winter elsewhere next year.

I think you would be startled at how many older Canadians spend winters in Florida and Arizona, and not necessarily particularly wealthy people. Working class people until retirement will have fairly modest places away from the coast, this is not just a phenomenon of the wealthy. Granted, not something that it is likely to be in reach for current generations, but not that long ago a glorified trailer wasn’t out of reach for most.

Myself, I am thinking of somewhere with a gentle climate like Ireland…

You’re welcome, though replace ‘gentle’ with ‘wet’

Not very gentle last week.

TIL that while Canadian crude (WCS) trades at a significant discount to US (WTI) because WTI is preferred for making gasoline, the supply of diesel in the American market is actually quite dependent on Canadian oil. While gasoline is the observed ‘price at the pump’, diesel is far more important for shipping costs.

It took Truss 49 days to crash the economy, the way Trump is going he’ll totally wreck the place far quicker than that.
Liz will be peeved!

I don’t want to even think about what 4 year-old lettuce would taste like though.

Dow Jones didn’t have a good day, but that obscures how bad a day it was for Chevron. The comment above about diesel was related to that - Chevron’s profits are extraordinarily dependent on taking Canadian crude and producing diesel for the US market.

Trump says he opened California’s water. Local officials say he nearly flooded them.
The Army Corps of Engineers moved to release massive quantities of water in Central California, panicking local officials.

Not one pint of which is relevant to the fires in Southern California…but let’s queue up the water shortage in June 2025 in Northern California that just got loaded up.

I don’t know why but it reminds me of some historical parallel from your own home… A pseudo-governmental agency without clearly defined responsibilities just seemingly enacting the wishes of the small penis at the top?
