So the orange felon has now totally lost his marbles.
Sayng NATO may have to help the US in annexing Greenland is tripe, anyway, but coming from the idiot who has been making noises about walking away from NATO,and everything else will likely alienate anyone he has missed so far, clue…probably not a lot!
Meantime Schumer shows just why the Democrats are dead in the water, and likely to stay there.
Unless I’m completely mistaken, his explanation also makes absolutely no sense unless you take the perspective that he didn’t read the bill, and has ignored any analysis of it.
I think he is just paralyzed by the normal dynamic that when government doesnt work the Dems automatically get blamed for it and is more concerned about that than what it means to vote for this. It seems a massive misreading of the situation. That was always part of the concern of continuing with such old and experienced leadership, that too much of their thinking would be influenced by politics as usual and not be able to develop the new mental model for what is currently happening. I’ve tried to think other more generous explanations but cannot.
The bizarre element is that the Democrats have largely come out ahead of the GOP in the public reaction to shutdowns, although in this case the Democrats are in a role reversal.
At the most basic level, I understand why they wish to avert the chaos of a shutdown, so I actually expected them to cave. But abdicating their constitutional role is shocking, and as long as that ‘one day’ clause is in there, there is no other interpretation of the significance. That was the last hand brake.
edit: Just reading notes that AOC is being urged to challenge Schumer in a primary, but Schumer is facing re-election in 2028. Not sure how useful that would be.
I think the idea of that is that the threat of it can be used to pressure him into acting in a way now that will keep her at her bay rather than thinking about it as a means to actually get new leadership. For as powerful as AOC is though I dont know if everyone would think of her of such a dangerous statewide candidate to think her threat was a sword of damocles
The other think is he’ll be 77 by the time his next election rolls around, and so facing a term that would keep him in office until he was 83. I know these fucks prefer to die in office then walk away, but I wonder whether at that age he would be a bit more YOLO to stand his ground rather than be cowed into doing something he disagrees with just to avoid a challenge.
“There would have been no war if i were president”
Trump forgetting that not only was this war was ongoing through his entire first term, but that his biggest scandal while in office was related to screwing with an arms deal congress had approved to give Ukraine weapons to defend itself in said war.
Trumpists have no principles. What even is their ideology? Everything they say they believe in, they turn on a dime. I suppose it’s a good thing, Trumpism can’t survive without Trump… but there may be nothing left but ash if he has his way.
AoC’s going public with her criticisms of Schumer is easy to present as standard Democratic party infighting - moderate/establishment vs progressive. But this is from Pritzker’s CoS who I think frames it more accurately.
This isn’t about free speech. Everyone has the right to protest and say what you believe, no matter how stupid it may be. You want to march in the street with flags paid for by the state of Qatar, that’s fine.
What you don’t have the right to do is destroy property, pitch tents for months on end, ban people from entering public places, intimidate people, be violent, shut down graduations, and so on. It took the federal government to cut funding before the gutless institution did what should have been done months ago.
