Demographics is Destiny was always an insane idea. Not just in thinking that people in a cohort remain the same as they age, but that the new cohorts would behave the same way as the previous cohorts.
What Shor makes clear in his analysis is that this is not a uniquely American issue, which while not absolving the Dems of the political failures in losing this group does significantly mitigate it. For those who think the strategies the Dems need to follow to get out of this hole is simply “stop being woke” the global nature of this trend should provide a lot of pause.
LOL I just listened to the second half of the interview and Shor is adamant that the role of a woke backlash is considerably over stated. The electorate saw this as a cost of living election and distrusted the Dems as a party on it and voted accordingly. Interestingly, this is consistent with Plough’s analysis that saw them switch to more of a focus on democracy >>economy, because simply put economy voters had already made up their mind to vote out the current lot and in their opinion by the time Harris got into the race it simply wasnt enough time to change that perception . To the degree that the “she’s for they/them” ad worked, it did because voters viewed it more as an economic message (Dems dont know what to do with our money) than one arguing against Woke.
The other interesting nugget was the role of tik tok. He noted the massive increase, up from effectively 0 in 2020, of the number of people who use it as their primary source of news. These are younger, less politically engaged people and in this group Trump won them by nearly 10 points, consistent with the finding that the lower the quality of the source of information the more likely someone was to vote for him.
I heard the podcast this morning. And I have no doubt that in its entirety, that’s true. Surveys have repeatedly shown that the economy and immigration were by far the most important issues.
What other surveys have shown, however, that for swing voters in swing states, it was one of the if not the most important issue, and they voted overwhelmingly for Trump. In a world of fine margins, it matters.
What can be said for left can also be said for the right, the divide is too wide and getting wider and that is the problem here.
I just don’t get the equivalence between right and left in the US.
The extreme right wing is in control of the government and is pushing through fascistic policies, attacking the judiciary and media and destroying long term alliances. Basically dismantling democracy.
The extreme left are discussing pronouns in the backroom of a bookshop.
It’s not the same thing.
