If only. If only Europeans, including obviously Ukrainians, had only the fate of the oblast of Crimea to worry he would be willing to concede to Russia.
The Ukrainians would have taken that peace in a heartbeat.

There is nothing to doubt there, Git. It would have been a major Ukrainian victory.
Obviously, ideally, you concede nothing to an agressor and defeat him soundly instead, but Russia seeks the obliteration of Ukrainian statehood, seeks to shackle it to itâs imperial sphere of interest. Force draconic stipulations on oblasts that would not go straight into the Russian Empire, such as demilitarisation and forced economic and political subjugation of remaining âFree Ukraineâ to the Russian Federation.
This has been the Russian War Goals since Day 1. To annihilate Ukrainian culture and sense of identity and to âreclaimâ it for the empire. A scenario where Russia would only win Crimea, which it had since 2014 de facto, would of course be a resounding Ukrainian victory and hardly justify the 900 000 Russian casualties and economic pain; but instead justify the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainain casulties and the Ukrainian pain.
This is why the Ukrainians fight, not because of the oblast of Crimea that they have not controlled since 2014; but for survival. I would have hoped everyone by now had realised that it is a genocidal war of conquest and not âjust another warâ.
But you donât say that loudly, for obvious reasons. Crimea is something to concede only in negotiations, to give Russia a win when they withdraw.
The problem now, with US aiding Russia and aid being stifled to Ukraine and Europe not being able to substitute ammo supplies, they risk losing a hell of a lot more than just Crimea and perhaps Donbas.
A lesson from history here is the Winter War. Why did Finland fight ? They lost a lot of people, in the end they had to endure humiliating loss of Karelia, their people ethnically cleansed. The question people should ask if they think this was a great victory for the Soviet Union is: what would have happened if Finland did not fight and only gave Stalin what he originally asked for. The answer is well researched and known, it would have been eaten by the Soviet Union and ceased to be a nation state. Therefore, the Winter War is seen by historians as a limited Finish victory and a humiliation of the Soviet Union (incidentally, the mauling the Red Army took convinced Adolf Hitler that the Soviet Union could indeed be conquered with later consequences a couple of years later, but I digress). Because they were unable to conquer Finland and had to make do with far less than what Stalin had envisioned. Finland got to keep their independence as well as most of their country. That is not the fate of all underdogs when fighting an agressive empire hellbent on territorial expansion and subjugation.
