Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 2)

In Obama’s second term he made his “Pivot to Asia” culminating in the Trans Pacific Partnership, a deal designed to upskill manufacturing in other Asian countries so US companies had alternatives they could to turn to instead of being forced into china where it was accepted as the cost of doing business that your IP would be stolen and rolled into a Chinese copy cat version of your product.

Trump ran against this as one of his main planks in that election, positioning it as a hand out to china. The press never held him accountable for proudly and defiantly misunderstanding the fundamental point of what he spend so much time talking about and instead tried to pretend there was some savvy politics in play…”critics say this is not what the TPP does, but trump is using this to connect with a group of voters who have concerns about China’s growth.”

The people who are supposed to call balls and strikes spend so much time arguing that a pitch that came out of the back of the pitchers hand during his wind up was actually a clever pitch giving the batter no chance to hit it

The successor agreement (CPTPP) isn’t as comprehensive, but achieved a lot of the same objectives. Interestingly, China has applied to join and has not been able to do so, because the structure means that the US has a veto by way of CUSMA through Mexico and Canada. With that trade agreement now essentially on life support, there is a real possibility that China will be allowed to enter while the US remains outside.

As badly as the media dropped the ball, would it have made a difference? I thought by then, large swathes of his current base were “doing their on research” on Facebook.

If they addressed that one issue differently? Maybe not. Even if they treated like a dog with a bone it could be positioned as a Trump vs the establishment where Trump just sees something they don’t.

But if they approached it differently as part of a fundamentally different approach to telling it how it is, then I have to believe things would be different. It’s become a cliche now, but it’s the idea that if a dem says it’s raining and a republican says it’s sunny then the news’ responsibility is to look out the window to see what the weather is doing and center that truth in their reporting on the disagreement. Republicans have long thrived in the environment where the press think their job is to center their story in how they think the public will react to a debate, treating republican lies as good politics the Dems need to respond to. Trump cannot exist in a world where the press understand that is an irresponsible ways cover the world

Trump has been ‘worse than Covid’ after only 75 days: ex-GOP lawmaker

Story by Tom Boggioni

Reacting to the economic chaos Donald Trump has set in motion with his decision to institute sweeping international tariffs that have had a devastating effect on the stock market, a former Republican member of the House compared the president to the Covid pandemic.

Appearing on MSNBC on Saturday morning, ex-Rep Dave Jolly (R-FL) attempted to put into perspective the economic damage the re-elected Trump has already done –– long before he has reached the 100-day mark of his second term.

Speaking with “The Weekend” co-host Michael Steele, the former head of the Republican National Committee, Jolly explained, “Let’s start with a snapshot in time, a real statistic measurable by consumer confidence. Donald Trump has had a greater impact on economic uncertainty than Covid -9 did –– think about that? In a matter of 75 days, Donald Trump has proven worse than Covid for economic uncertainty. That’s your buddy.”

He then added, “That’s families across the country. Those are consumers, low income, high income, wherever they are and I think what’s fascinating with this issue, that we may not see with others in the same way, I agree with [California Democratic Rep] Robert Garcia, there’s a latency to this where it’s going to get much worse.”

He later added, “I’m not sure Donald Trump realizes that the world economy may not need the United States of America in 2025. In the past, in trade wars, we were the heavyweight where maybe we knew we could win. I’m not sure we win this trade war.”

“There is a good possibility that Donald Trump just launched a trade war that doesn’t just cool off, doesn’t just return back to baseline, but a trade war that the United States loses,” he added. “And it is because of his ignorance, but also because of his vanity that he has gotten us into this. I don’t know how he gets us out of it, truly.”

It’s good to see some reaction from the people… shows that there might actually be a groundswell of voices becoming louder, and greater in number as the weeks/months start to pass.
What they need is a good slogan, or rallying cry everyone can get behind to join all these factions. While a good song could also become an anthem to their cause… I’m sure this could be chosen by someone far better at it than me… Although, if this one had more of a stirring melody… some of the lines are brilliant, and spot-on…
