This story became a rallying cry for MAGA before the last election. It wont surprise many to find out the real story is actually quite a bit different than the one that spread through right wing circles.
It turns out the authorities initially actually ignored repeated reports of this guy having a pet squirrel as they didnt think it worth anyone’s time to respond to it even though it was not legal. They only chose to act on the reports when they found out he also had a pet racoon, an animal that can be an asymptomatic carrier of rabies. In those cases they are required to put the animals under quarantine and if anyone gets bitten or scratched in the process then the animal has to be euthanized. Autopsy is the only way to test for rabies and the disease is so deadly in humans that for an exposed person to survive they have to start incredibly unpleasant treatment immediately and so its imperative to know ASAP if the person has been exposed. The authorities would do this with your dog, let alone your pet squirrel if someone got bitten by an animal they had a reasonable concern could be carrying the disease. Of course, one of the officers reported being bitten.
I thought this was a great episode with popular historian Heather Cox Richardson. She traces the origin of anti-socialist sentiment on the right coming from attempts to sanitize their pro-white policies into something more palatable in the post-civil war era and reframes MAGA in that lineage. It’s a pretty compelling argument.

The SC struck down the lower court’s ruling on the ICE raids with Kavannaugh saying that racially profiling people as a means to investigate their legal status, something the courts had previously ruled unconstitutional, is not just legal but “common sense”.
As Kate Walsh has argued, rather than getting wound up about the constitutional crisis that would happen when trump ignored the court, the real one we should have been more concerned about was the MAGA court just letting him run rought shod over the constitution.

The damage to credibility is to the United States and to NATO, not Trump, who has no personal credibility in any case. The rest of the world doesn’t operate on personal relationships.
Possibly the one thing that might spur that moron into action is a little self-awareness from him that he is being taken for a ride by Netanyahu , Putin , et al. I don’t really think there is a comparison worth talking about in regards to Russia deliberatly overflying Poland and so NATO air space, to attack Ukraine (even targeting a Polish military base in an obvious message, since all drones that flew into Poland were decoys and contained no munitions) and the Israeli strike on the political Hamas leadership in Qatar (in what was clearly a botched Israeli operation, for which they will pay a political cost for little strategic benefit). Yes, there was loss of life in Qatar, but all within a circle of Hamas loyalists (but notably, the actual targets all survived, which means Israel pays premium political capital for breaching Qatari sovreignty, for killing only 3-4 Hamas mooks; which in military terms means it’s a big botch in terms of cost-benefit, unless all Israel waans is to press Qatar to throw Hamas out, in which case I guess that miiiight be possible). The Israeli attack is intersting only in so far as to how big a cost they will have to pay (political capital) in regards to their relations with the Gulf States and their so called Abraham Pact states (I hope a lot, but we’ll see).
There should be no comparison between a loose protection scheme and cooperation that the US has with Qatar and an actual Pact Alliance.
The scenario around NATO is quite different and much more escalatory.

Technically, he may be alive. But I have seen a video clip and I have seen much war footage. He looks to be dying to me. I hope that if he is actually a Christian, like he claims, that he uses his final moments to pray and hopefully say something nice to another human being he cares about. God knows his internet persona never does the latter.
NOTE: Do not watch the video of Kirk, which circulates. It’s far uglier than you may imagine and actually made me very uncomfortble (and I am much like a surgeon, a bit blasè with sights of grievious injuries and death, compared to most people). The video is in the category of extremely graphic war footage but in a civilian setting, filmed in close. Strongly recommend caution if you come across it. It’s ok to read a headline on Twitter but not click on the video in the description (I do it all the time).
