I’ll put this here but it could equally go in the Climate or the Space threads. It just shows how completely deranged the Trump administration is. This is a benefit to them but they put their false beliefs above all else. (That’s the polite version)

That story got reported two days and has already disappeared with a whimper. You’d think the “no foreign wars” “we’re bringing meritocracy and competency back” guy would face a lot of heat for something like this

Given the state of politics in America, I do fear for the loss of this capability. I can only hope there are enough in Congress who will be well enough informed to preserve the satellite and the work it does. 
On a related note, it makes me wonder why the rest of the world can’t develop their own technology to do a similar job?

No worries that channel forms part of my Friday morning routine.
I knew they were destroying the satellite and how it was such a catastrophe for climate monitoring and modelling, but I did not know it could track and assist with major agriculture and crop yields. Timescales are the issue regarding a replacement. Ideally you want a new one up and running before the existing one is destroyed so you get that calibration overlap. Who has $20bn to pile in and is able to reschedule all current programmed launches? Funny as hell if SpaceX did it, but they wont.
It’s really not helping that I’m getting a bit crazy on the climate change stuff at the moment as well. I’m all over anything I can find on it. I’m more than a little triggered by this decision by Trump.

I haven’t come across his name, Eric Schmitt, much before but am afraid to ask whether he is just another Trump “satellite senator” or something closer to the party grassroots.

Basically declaring war on Chicago…where I just moved my youngest. It’s a really fun city, with lots of beautiful spaces, but…deep blue, and JB Pritzker.

Probably the least problematic about that,but yet another example of these people not understanding art (or history), portraying yourself as Kilgore, because they think he’s cool and badass, instead of a psychopath in love with unnecessary cruelty in a war his side ultimately lost.
