Never heard of him till a few days ago.
Wish I still hadn’t,he has become a trigger for all the right wing shit imaginable, but on the bright side is showing what kind of arsehole the US elected.
Note the comment in post 2/2 about the average person likely just tuning out. That is the Putin playbook…infect the conversation enough bullshit that truth feels unknowable. In that situation people fall back into their gut reactions…ones that generally favor the arguments authoritarians make for why they are justified in snatching more power and violating laws to control “disorder”
Also note how little of the mourning and praise directly reference his specific ideas. They reference his impact but when they reference his ideas they do only in the abstract (e.g. public debate and persuasion), Why is that? Well, this is an example from a popular category…using Kirk’s words to stand alone and being condemned by the right for saying mean things about him not realizing these are verbatim Kirk’s own words https://x.com/drchasespears/status/1966889070245855616?s=61&t=VxX1vHU3NOwwNhlbyICG-g
I think another angle of this is the right famously bad literary comprehension…the sort of thing where they don’t understand something as simple as starship troopers and ask “well yeah, why would you side with the bugs over humans? And where can I get a jacket like the one NPH wears?” About the only counter argument they ever make for the awfulness of Kirk’s own words is the demand that we look to the bigger context of those comments, but then can never present any context that would mitigate the awfulness of it.
This bill is being debated on Wednesday. It proposes that Rubio be given the right to revoke passports (not citizenship as reported in some places) of people for essentially speech crimes. The text may not directly say that it would be applied to people simply for criticizing Israel, but we have already seen the State Department define that as the aid, assistance or otherwise provided material support to an organization the Secretary has designated as a foreign terrorist organization the bill references.
It was proposed by a US politician dressed in full IDF uniform.
