It’s hard to understand the hatred required to do this act, when those detained are probably going to be deported anyway.
This, for once, is cruelty I don’t really understand. Or mental illness perhaps, since I read previously (maybe it’s wrong, it was preliminary) that the shooter took his own life.
Western culture probably needs a reset, in terms of the news, to something like the BBC’s original charter, or equivalent, which was independent politically and for the public good, with accompanying high journalistic standards. I’m not so sure we will get the reset we need.
Part of the problem is also education. Exhibit A: just listen to Trump talking to the UN. He’s a village idiot! It is embarrassing for America that such an uninformed man addresses world leaders like that.
I’m going on a little tangent on educational standards, as something struck me the other day. I came across a Christmas sermon, written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1887 that was published in 1900, a few years after his death. During the time he wrote the sermon he was probably depressed and in a period of convalescence. He lived a short life, dying in his early 40s I believe.
Anyway, all that is to say that I found the sermon to be quite hard reading and it made me wonder if people back then were just more proficient in grasping the various references and so on.
I have a Master’s Degree and I’m reasonably well educated by today’s standards (not compared to some of the great posters on here, btw, which is one of the great things about this place) but the cultural and literary references in his sermon, as well as the use of Latin phrases, and just the way he wrote, had me reading and re-reading, and I wondered if the average person back then was really well educated.
I can’t help but wonder what the intelligent and literary people of the nineteenth century would make of someone like Trump. I would imagine they would be astonished that such an uneducated person could be President.
Education wasnt for the average person then. But those who were educated then had far more of a focus on the classical approach which wouldnt cover even a fraction of the things a decent high school education would give today’s student. But it made them good at Greek, Latin, literature and philosophy.
Fair enough. For the intended audience, they knew their Latin and their literature, and for the modern reader, it was a stretch. (Grateful for my Latin ‘O’ Level).
Lindsey is the epitome of what is wrong in American politics. He will say whatever he believes will keep him in power, and running the gravy train of money and “gifts” from lobbyists, and his constituents. Lindsey changes his stance/opinions on issues more often than he changes his underwear.
It makes me cringe in embarrassment now to think at one time I actually thought this guy was an honourable man unafraid to follow his conscience and not blindly adhere to the party line. His demeaning admission during the first Trump Presidency that being ‘relevant’ and close to power was his real motivation for doing a complete about face , his later repudiation of Trump after Jan 6 on the Senate floor , and subsequent re-embarkation onto the Trump train when he saw which way the wind was blowing has to be one of the most inglorious acts of self-interest displayed by any politician ever. I loathe the man.
Exactly. That’s why I was wondering if he gradually became corrupt , or if this was always him. He shone in McCain’s shadow, but when that man became very ill and died, he embraced the man who had mocked him in a cruel manner (for no reason).
I think once he achieved that nexus with Trump and the most powerful office in the land then nothing else mattered. I’m of the opinion now that he used his friendship with McCain to burnish his ‘independent mind’ credentials and that it was all a con.
Well, I live in S Carolina, and can say with conviction that most everyone involved in politics in this state knows exactly what Lindsey is about. It is not serving his people, but himself.
Yeah superficially he’s changed, but really all that is changed is what he’s lying about and pretending to believe. Really the only thing he believes in is doing what is necessary to be close to power and will support whatever is necessary for that to happen.
Even Kash is posting about the bullets being engraved now, sharing the pics of the alleged casings, and speculating on the motive. This is not how investigations are supposed to be conducted and can completely undermine a criminal case.
