That was likely not smart, unless Kimmel has caved, why would he?Had a big slice of the US on side.
âThis show is not important. What is important is that we get to live in a country that allows us to have a show like this,â Kimmel said to whoops from his studio audience.
I donât know Kimmel, nor what he does, but I can only agree with the above quote. So, heâll hopefully continue to tear into Trump and his cronies, as they deserve.
Heâs that bloke you always mix up with Fallon.
This is a really important take from someone who has long been really on top of the US immigration situation.

There has been a growing sense on the left (and from the sensible centrists always desperate to punch left) that maybe the Biden admin was actually too accepting of illegal immigration and should have done more earlier. But this is purely a vibes argument that mistakes what the challenge was during the Biden presidency. The spike we experienced was in asylum cases not illegal immigration. These are not the same thing, they are managed completely differently by law and provide very different stresses on the immigration system. An administration does not have anything like the same options in changing course in how to respond to an increase in asylum cases as they do with illegal status without the admin simply ignoring the law.
What a peculiar exchange

Personally, I loath all American talk shows, except the satirical ones (but even they, I have problems with).
Loath those American shows where it is all about âthe Hostâ. This is also why I donât take US media seriously. A journalist is never supposed to be the news, but relate them. In the US, journalists are stars and it disgusts me.
The talk Shows are of course a million times worse than the news; but same disgusting culture. Give me an âanonymousâ (well not anonymous, but someone who doesnât say "i am Jack blablah and this is my fantastic show blah blah) man or woman relating news and explainin them with a serious voice; not that American unserious Game Show shit. It is so unseemly and I just find it totally revolting; and cannot fathom how people wants to get informed in such a dumbed down way.
So if Fallon, Kimmel, Degeneres or whatâs her name, all went off air permanently, I think it would be a mighty improvement. But not like this of course and it woulnd¨t have been replaced with anything sombre and serious that you can actually learn from anyway.
But news as Game Shows ? Not for me. I have 0.000% respect for it and want far higher quality and far deeper reporting. Norwegian NRK (which is based on the BBC originally) doesnât have lot of resources, but itâs much better than US tv news circus shows. News should and serious matters should never ever be âshowâ.
Itâs from the Show Culture that you got Trump, after all. Perhaps it was always coming.
Jimmy Kimmel Live isnât a news show. Heâs a comedian who starts with a monologue, similar format to most of them - Myers, Colbert, Fallon. He routinely bashes Trump and MAGA as there is so much material there itâs hard not to.
The show has a live band and then he has a couple of guests for an easy chat/not-too-serious interview.
I think the genre is called light entertainment. Anyway, itâs not the news and whether or not you care for Kimmel or this sort of thing, what is important is to live in a country where you have the free speech to criticize and satirize the government.
That is being severely tested here, unfortunately, under authoritarian Trump, so there is an important space in the public square for the likes of Jimmy Kimmel.
Edit
The main comment I will make about the news in America is that it is unreliable. The chief problem is it is bought and paid for, so billionaire owners influence the type of coverage. The whole thing is a bad joke.
The remedy is an independently funded public broadcasting service, and America has that, and it needs to be beefed up, but unfortunately it is under threat from Trump.
In terms of depth of coverage, I think there has been a culture shift or dumbing down across the board, not just in America. In the UK I remember the depth of the BBC early on, but in more recent years it generally hasnât had the same sort of journalistic depth or tenacity.
Someone who is scared of stairs
I just cannot stomach it. Itâs my personality, I want to always learn something, or at least teach something. I cannot stand such âlight entertainmentâ really (of course I love being entertained, but not at all like that; where you have to shut off your brain).
But talk shows are one thing, those I can avoid. The US news culture, not so easy to avoid. âThis is ABC News with bla blah blah (says names)â. Ugh !!!
I hear you. You have to go out of your way to find decent news sources when it should be something in the public interest that is readily available. It should also be reliable, due to agreed upon journalistic standards, but there is so much bias and so many lies that the coverage is largely worthless.
When you add the dysfunction of social media to the mix, there is a significant problem with the information system, and people are far too uninformed and easily swayed.
Kimmel is the wrong target for this because as you say he is an entertainer not a journalist. But it is a fair observation I think that the US has too much of a focus on personal brand in our news, and that results in incentives that produces worse news.
You need a brand to get any attention, and no one is interested in a brand of just âthis happened todayâ. Instead everyone jostles for the most interesting take of what this means. It means you can watch the news and not actually get any news, only what a bunch of talking heads think about how people will respond to the news (that you arent yet clear on because no one will just say the thing that actually happened). It focuses on politics not government. It gives politicians room to say things that the journos know isnt true but think will âplay well with their baseâ.
And the problem with the fragmentation of the information environment is this problem is only getting worse.
Yes, I do very active Self Censorship when it comes to US talk shows so I donât necessarilly know which are ânewsyâ and which ones are âcomedyâ. I lump the circus together really.
But I just donât like the Talk Show culture and I really do think US news coverage is too much talk-show like with dramatic music and focus on personalities instead of what ought to be important.
My favorite journalists are reporters who talk authoritatively with knowledge of the topic they are reporting on (meaning they have read up on the background on what they are reporting on). The media is supposed to teach, after all. I think itâs not enough of that in the US and itâs also sadly becoming much less of it in my own country.
A sniper has shot up an ICE detainment facility in Dallas, but targeted the detainees not the government agents. Three detainees confirmed dead so far and the right are already shit posting, including Vance and Noem, about unacceptable attacks on officials just doing their jobs. This is exactly the point Kimmel was making in completely mischaracterized comments that saw him get suspended
