Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

That line could get very thin indeed,a lot wont be keen on standing over,or worse, friends and family, to prop up that arsehole.

I was surprised that Trump and Hegseth don’t like beards. In the films I have seen all ‘the best’ American Generals had pointy ones. Perhaps it’s a trans thing?

What makes these cunts certain that Stockdale, Schwarzkopf and Patton would have supported them in the first place?

They were more likely to spit in their face and call them out for what they are.

Just watched the news here in Oz,decent coverage of The Donalds crass stupidity.
Standouts for me was him getting the shits because he didn’t get applause and the row after row of wooden faces, all clearly in WTAF mode.
Seems he might have done a great job,in 8 months getting the top brass offside and maybe a whole tranche of Americans.
Well done Donald!

I remain very worried as to the consequences for my country when he does not get it this year

John Bolton told us a week ago that we shouldn’t worry and it would be just some social media rage and that Trump would react with verbal rage for a week or two, before blowing over. But I am not so sure.

The guy who is publicly loling it up at executing random Venezuelan fishermen, very possibly because he is confused about what asylum means in the context of immigration, thinks he deserves the peace prize.

Yeaahhh… Full Metal Jacket is back! I’m sure that will go down well with the new recruits. They might have trouble to find some, mind…

I am just very worried. I am not sure it is going to be just hot air like Bolton claims, but political and economical punitive sanctions that will lead to many Norwegians losing their jobs (i.e. tariffs etc.)

Of course, on a global scale, this is perhaps not a big thing at all, but I am Norwegian so…

The chance for Norwegians to do their bit by resisting the Fascist Fuck. Giving him the peace prize would destroy its value and refusing it to him and causing a rage would help galvanise allies (especially in Europe) into recognising the need to exclude the US and come together.

Luckily for norway you’ve got a large sovereign wealth fund that will help shield you somewhat

Still not thinking about moving out? But maybe you’re in a quiet spot and see nothing of all this.

I hope that the Nobel price comittee will show him the middle finger. Nothing he has done has promoted peace anywhere. He has been either naive and clueless, or worse, plain evil.

He doesn’t deserve it, that’s the plain truth.

Edit: the Nobel price is Swedish, is it not? How does it concern your country?

Yes, it’s a First World problem, of course. I don’t mean to exaggerate the scope of it. Compared to most of the world, we will be fine. But it’s a potential big incomming political problem for my country; so of course I care about it.

And no, he is not going to get the Peace Prize on the basis of his grotesque Gaza Mandate Plan (which has multiple issues even if Hamas accepts it), but he is not going to take it on the chin, I fear.
And no, I don’t in any form or way support or hope that he will be given the Peace Prize, I am merely worried as to the consequences when he doesn’t get it. Because as the classic movie Threads say, everything is interconnected in society (I know, alien thought for many Americans, but still a fact).

I don’t think it is going to become horrific or anything. I am just worried.

Read just a bit and you’ll have an explanation.

Oh, I’ve just learnt something. As Nobel had the Swedish nationality, I always assumed that the Nobel Peace price was Swedish too. Thanks mate. :+1:

Happy to be of help !

I was in Chicago this weekend. The two locations where ICE activities have got all the media attention are about a mile from each other (Millenium Park, the home of the bean, and the riverwalk) right in the heart of a downtown that is always busy with people and rarely seeing any aggro. The riverwalk area specifically is incredibly visitor friendly. It is the textbook example of the things people praise of 15 min cities - thriving businesses, hospitality, tourism, recreation, walkability, easily accessible and effective public transport, and overall just lots of people communally enjoying the same space. The idea any sort of additional policing was needed there is a joke. But the wild thing is we were right in the middle of it. We walked to the train around 1pm on our way back to the airport, right through this neighborhood and saw none of this ICE presence and even more importantly experienced absolutely nothing that would indicate anything like this was required. It was really surreal to get home and see the videos of it all on the streets we had been walking and enjoying just hours before.

It was a response to nothing and really just materialized out of thin air to seemingly just terrorize political dissenters and brown people.

If it was just me, I probably would strongly consider moving back to the UK. The complicating factor is family life. My wife was born here, and grew up here, before going to university in the UK. All of her family - parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, live nearby.

Our two kids are in college over here too. One has a small business and is going to college online. The other is away at college in another state. Basically, it feels like life is here now.

In addition to the family ties, and life being here now, I also live in a quiet part that seems fairly unaffected. I live in a northern suburb of Indianapolis - very low crime, low taxes, high employment, good schools, facilities, etc.

What I am watching for is whether or not we will still have free and fair elections in America. With gerrymandering and efforts at voter suppression, that has been tested for a while now, but we still have - relatively - free and fair elections, albeit within the framework of a broken information system.

If we get to the point where citizens are not allowed to vote, and thus determine their own political leaders and future, then I’m not sure I could live here. That’s one aspect that I am watching closely.

Fingers crossed ROTW. Can’t say I’m optimistic about the elections.

Just from your experience, do you think that people in your community feel that their democracy is under threat? and if so, do they care?

There’s so much going on that would have been unthinkable just ten years ago, ICE raids, military intervention in US cities, all kinds of attacks on the constitution etc. Are people around you disturbed by these developments?

“They” just killed Charlie Kirk just for having an opinion. That is why Trump HAS to do this clamp down, because if he doesnt we wont have a democracy left. FREE SPEECH. FREE SPEECH.

Now lets all tone down the rhetoric…because if we dont you fucking marxists fascists are getting thrown in the gulag. Or worse. This is war. And in war time you cannot speak ill of the president.

I meant more the mainstream people who aren’t rabidly maga. Surely there are some still around?
Trump is down in the polls, isn’t he? So there must be some opposition to what’s going on.
