They are basically the sister agency of Customs and Border Protection, one that focuses on interior enforcement. Its creation was part of the big post 9/11 homeland security reorganization. Turning over those responsibilities to a standalone agency solely focusing on enforcement, as opposed to one with a holistic view in immigration as was the case before, has been argued from the start that it attracts the sort of blood lust filled staff that you should not have anywhere near those sorts of operations.
The abolish ICE calls from some on the left were never about a desire for open borders, but a reflection of it being agency with too much political power to be held accountable and staffed by people who thought the brown shirts were the good guys.

No, it seems more violent than it actually is. The vast majority of the protests are peaceful and are merely a reaction to provocation. I still believe that a few rioters were planted there to make it look worse than it actually is.

There are idiots everywhere. But if you compare these images with France, for example, and what sometimes goes on there, itâs no worse. A very welcome distraction from the ongoing Musk-Trump drama of the last few days, and an incredible opportunity for Trumpâs ego to get one over on California and make things up. He was probably just waiting for such an opportunity. Trump deliberately escalates the situation.
I also wouldnât rule out the possibility that all those pardoned January 6er were made for just such an occasion, and that they are now taking part to return the favor.
