I feel in the trump era we often find ourselves warning about what the current awfulness portends to in a way that skips over that what is actually happening now is awful already. There was a bit in that piece that is clearly stated but glossed over what it means - a US citizen made the proactive decision to carry her passport with her so she could demonstrate she is a citizen despite there being no legal requirement for citizens to have to prove any such thing and the authorities not being legally allowed to detain you simply on suspicion of not being a citizen. We jumped straight over becoming a âshow me your papersâ country to being one where the papers didnt actually matter that much.
This is why the years of âyou cant call them fascist because they havenât exterminated millions of jews yetâ was so misguided and damaging. There are no end of fascistic actions taken on the way to that and each of them individually are socially and civically devastating. It appropriate to fight those battles where the battle lines already are rather than constantly worrying about where we think they are going.

I donât really believe it will go to 0 (certainly not to 0 in short term), but if true, tariff pressure certainly had a positive effect quite fast. Sometimes Trump, due his undiplomatic autocratic heavy handedness, does positive things only he could do. Clearly, Russian oil is becoming more costly for India, so they will certainly be purchasing less.
If anyone wants to write about how âfairâ this is , go ahead. I wouldnât give a fuck as eggs must be smashed to stave of Russian victorory and whoever is on the other side by choice, is on the other side by choice. Industrial wars are never local, they go global always and if you then side with Russia, you are siding with Russia and it is rather irrelevant if it is due to geopolitical necessity or not. This is about Russiaâs macro-economy after all.
I donât know if the world is going to end or what, but first Marjorie Taylor Greene, and now Hegseth, are starting to talk some sense

Some may recall the Republican outrage over the Lois Lerner âscandalâ of the late Obama years where they believed that Obama directed the IRS to go after conservative groups. In reality what was happening was the IRS was inundated with an increase in submissions from new groups claiming tax exempt status and this was due to the rise of the tea party - an overtly anti-taxation political movement. It is entirely reasonable that the IRS would pay extra scrutiny to the tax related activities of an overtly anti tax political org, but in response to being overwhelmed with the increase of their workload they had some field offices were found to have taken short cuts based on politics. Critically though both the OIG and FBI found no criminal wrong doing or political conspiracy but rather confirmed it was a tax org acting within their remit but in responding to very real pressures ended up doing it poorly. Yet, to this day the RW have convinced themselves that Obama set his FBI on RW orgs so this is their retribution.

The wealth of âthis is just how young people talkâ excuses is probably a bit unintentionally revealing. Yes, this is the lingua franca of RW spaces these days. Many of the people may not believe these things, but speaking this way is how you identify yourself as part of the group. But that is precisely what people have been saying IS THE PROBLEM for 5 years or so now.
There are no other spaces where the extremity that is common here are remotely acceptable. And there is no way to be so incessantly ironic about thinking the nazis werent that bad without you eventually convincing yourself of it.
EDIT also worth noting that âyoung republicanâ is a misleading name. These are not powerless college kids, but are an actual organization with members sometimes as old as 40 and with those in leadership having status and position within the actual party. These are not some online weirdos you can ignore by logging off from twitter
