Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

Seems the Tangerine Tantrum is having a serious tanty, apparently some people had the effrontery to vote for the Dems,he is probably only pissed off that he has been claiming he is the belle of the ball,.seems a few disagree.
Suck it up Donald!

Probably true, but it’s also a deeply ingrained cultural value in the US. Sure, much more for traditional conservatives, but the ā€œworshipā€ of the Founders is seen everywhere in US culture.

In Norway we celebrate the Eidsvoll men too, and it’s common to honour founders of a constitution anywhere in the world, but it’s low key and not at all like how Americans speak about their ā€œFoundersā€.

The accepted understanding of much of America’s history is a very juvenile understanding of it. Much of it is based around the framing that supports the concept of ā€œAmerican Exceptionalismā€, and the attitude to the founding fathers is just one example of that.

The perfect illustration that the historical advantage Republicans have on certain issues exist because Dems refuse to engage on those issues thinking that having a fighting over a strength of your opponent is bad politics. No, it is bad politics to allow them to get a default level of credit over an issue on which they are actually terrible, and when you force voters to face that reality they come around.

The lesson is stop running away from fights just because you are starting from behind. You are only behind because you refuse to engage, but these are winnable and the benefit is enormous. Crime, public safety, the economy, immigration, patriotism…all winning issues for a Dem party that just pulled its head out of its arse.

I’m starting to see some news that the US economy is in real trouble. Have I missed anything here?

Whatever it is, it will be Biden’s fault. Or maybe Obama.

I haven’t seen anything yet, but the stock market has appeared to be in rude health, but, as with all things Trump, it’s all smoke and mirrors. The underlying fundamentals are bad, and America is probably overdue a good-sized correction.

Bond market is where the tremors are, is what I’m hearing. But the jobs market etc. is also starting to reflect the reality of Trumps policies.

There are lots of very troubling indicators - missed car payments are nearing an all-time high, credit card delinquency, etc. The ~400% jump in health insurance that the Democrats have been fighting against is just kicking in.

Basically, the MAGA working class is getting what they voted for.

There is a reflex to dunk on Trump, and it is true that there are some fundamental risks and forces that predate him (see convo about the AI bubble the other day) but its difficult to overstate how much of this is self imposed by his ideological idiocy.

Waits until corpse is carried out before resuming grand speech and smiling for the media

At least it woke him up

But a burger would have been nice, though

Okay, that is my silly nonsense done with.

Carry on, guys.

I still don’t understand why Republicans don’t accede to the Dems demands on the shutdown and save themselves a world of pain later. Is it really all just down to Trump’s intransigence ?

There is possibly never been a better line said in US politics than Nancy’s ā€œyou take a punch, but you’ve got to be willing to throw a punch…for the children.ā€

There’s a lot of speculation on the upcoming UK budget, which is likely to be painful, but there’s some speculation that Reeves is running scared. I am wondering if they suspect there’s something in the water brewing away, US side, and she is trying to set some cushions.

But Arminius says, everywhere you look you can see blinking red lights. Even the strong stock market is being propped up by the results of a small number of companies who are unusually exposed to the AI industry, which is itself a huge concerns even if you didnt believe we are in a bubble
