Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

At least China has made some move to see it as an opportunity but yeah I think we are already at that point. I agreed with a colleague of mine about 6 years ago that it was probably too late to prevent the excesses.

Though perhaps we are seeing America become irrelevant, none of its plans have much future and they will end up dead ending themselves. It’s probably the most important midterms in the history of the country… Wouldn’t surprise me if it breaks up over time.

Huh? Nothing to do with what I said or referred to, but ok…

Probably quoted the wrong person, I was doom scrolling and half awake.

End of the day Europe have to plan for a world without US support but also a world where they remain none plussed. Greenland throws up many issues where others don’t. Though I see no issues with the leaders of Europe this past weekend. And to be fair have remained very steadfast in its support for Ukraine.

Anyhow i have my own thoughts

Yeah, I can see that. Seems like you’re talking to yourself too (haven’t even mentioned last weekend, let alone critiqued)

It’s incredible he just say this stuff when the accuracy and appropriateness of comments from the president used to be considered important. It feels trite to comment on it, but it is important I think to remind ourselves just how wrong it is for a president to be doing this.

The whole return to this bastardized idea of the Monroe Doctrine (one that only requires them to stay out of European affairs when convenient) is entirely a Russian plan based on creating a framework for them to reexert authority over “their empire”.

I’m currently wondering how much of all of this actually of Russian origin. Taking Greenland effectively ends NATO (well its already dead, it just doesnt know it) and that suits Russia down to the ground. And of course that feeds in perfectly of Trump being a Russian asset and so on

He’s now apparently conceded this isn’t the case

The press really needs to treat as a first principle that anything this administration states on the record is not to be trusted and is likely immediately disprovable, and frame their coverage in that context.

I think there is the question of where the idea came from that the Monroe Doctrine is something we need to return to and then one about how specifically that plays out. So I think what you have are lots of people in proximity to him pushing their pet projects. So the specific focus on Greenland probably came from someone close to him, but its only viable because the Russians planted the seed that Trump should be allowed to do this sort of stuff to anywhere and anyone in the Americas.

Seems fairly clear that he had not seen the video, and was caught offguard by the actual sequence of events.

Really does point to a White House running him.

May Kavanagh’s name be remembered in infamy for approving these blatantly unconstitutional “Kavanagh stops”

This is incredible - chasing them away with snowballs

I think @Limiescouse is right regarding pet projects. That’s evident with RFK jnr, Millers stuff and so on but theres the flipside where all of those in that inner government circle parrot his social media rants almost word for word at times.

Did I see a press conference from Waltz saying he is mobilising the guard there?

I think we’re all still partly conditioned (through the media, the movies etc) to see Russia as bad guys and America as good guys. The truth is that America have been the cause of more war, more aggression, and more suffering around the world than Russia have. And not just under Trump

Just wanted to comment on Greenland. If America is concerned about security, there is a mechanism already in place to address the concern. Increase the scope of the military base you already have in Greenland. Add other bases too, depending on the perceived security threat.

But crucially, do this through NATO, so it is NATO troops defending NATO land. It would be very fitting too, considering it is located in the NORTH ATLANTIC!

Oh, hang on a sec, my mistake.

It’s not about security, so the simple solution above, that would be a joint solution within the existing structure, won’t be happening any time soon.

It’s about exploiting natural resources to benefit America (mostly Trump and his cronies). I am encouraged by the strong European response - strong in diplomatic terms, at least. Let’s see if America rides roughshod over it and escalates, and if so, what will the response be?

America is a rogue nation under Trump. Some of the GOP are starting to speak out against him, but sadly mostly it is people who are retiring or moving on from politics.

Switching to Minneapolis, a different issue but in some ways the same, as again it is about an authoritarian government that just wants to strong-arm its will - God bless the people there. The latest appalling deed by ICE might start to ignite something that could rise up to be a real challenge for Trump.

Finally, Epstein is not being discussed, as DOJ lackeys continue to purge and redact the files and millions of records. A couple of weeks ago when it was building a little head of steam we all wondered what Trump would do next to try to keep Epstein out of the news.

Venezuela. Greenland. ICE.

That’s the horrific answer so far.

Most Latin Americans are hearing this discussion of the ‘re-emergence’ of the Monroe Doctrine with some incredulity.

I don’t disagree at all, but I’m looking for a motivation. I doubt Trump voukd find Greenland on map until it became a thing. So that idea was sewn but then who does it suit? Sure the US would win access to whatever Greenland holds without European legislation hindering them and of course there’s the Arctic access. But this properly kills off NATO. Who does that suit I wonder? Those Baltic states become a bit softer and a fractured Europe suits this overall idea of carving the planet up Orwell style.

Only my opinion, but america has always been a rouge state , the way they have conducted themselves since the end of the war has always been like this, but it was always done behind the guise that they are a peace loving nation only interested in preserving democracy around the world.

We all know / knew it was bullshit , but it was easier to stomach than the alternative answer that we are mere slaves to serves americas political masters interest…

Its funny how the anti trump lot ( and there is slowly becoming more thankfully ) blame him for all the current ills , but this is not new , it has been the same with biden, obama and every other fucker in charge …only difffernce is the cunt that is trump is openly admitting he no longer gives a fuck about the pretence.
