Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

I think it’s a fair comment. From the time of the westward expansion of America, the genocide of the people who were already here and the taking of the land under the doctrine of “Manifest Destiny” (probably a precursor to the Monroe Doctrine, at least in some ways) America has always had a healthy dose of ‘might is right.’

In more recent times there has usually been some sort of decency to it, still favoring America of course, as they carried the most clout, but within the constraints of some reasonable global norms that were established after WW II.

Those norms have either gone, or are rapidly disappearing, as the current American leadership is brazen and morally untethered in its actions.

I suppose, going all the way back in history, first to the British Empire and then numerous others that came before, it has always been like this. At least somewhat.

But it seems galling that it can still happen in this day and age, in America, as it continues to perceive itself, and project itself, as some sort of shining light to the world.

It might be naive, but I hope that there might be course correction soon, before we are on an irreversible path into WW III. It may be a combination of Trump’s health, Epstein, or an accumulation of the things that he is doing, that sees enough people - politicians, perhaps militarily, and certainly the general public - rise up to stop it.

So Emperor Trump has decreed that power is constrained by his own morality!
If so,the US and beyond are in deep shit.
Unless someone can explain just what morality he is on about.

I’m wondering what the scope might be for some sort of escalated conflict? For example, say Tim Walz calls in the National Guard to protect Minnesotans, and the perceived foreign or domestic threat in this instance is the domestic threat of ICE.

Will the Minnesota National Guard get into armed combat to remove or defeat ICE, to protect the people of Minnesota? And how could it potentially escalate if that happens?

Edit
I looked it up and there are three stages and Walz has the National Guard in stage 2 of 3. Poised. It has the Republicans flapping, and they want to use the insurrection act against him.

Would the National Guard obey Walz? Aren’t they all Maga?

That’s a great point. Lots of law enforcement and National Guard types are drawn to MAGA. Ugh.

It’s going to end up with civil war, which will be necessary (unfortunately). America is fucked. Get out while you still can!

We have seen abundantly how violent the US are, both internally, and in how they deal with the rest of the world. They have by far the most victims from shootings, and since the end of WW2, they started or at least were implicated in a lot of wars, more than any other nation.

I don’t want to paint a whole nation with the same brush, but it seems that more often than not, problems are ‘resolved’ by being violent. After all, this is a nation who practiced large-scale genocide not so long ago. Their civil war was the most violent and deadly of probably all civil wars. 700k dead and around 500k wounded, according to the newest studies, from a total population of 31 millions.

Ergo, whatever the outcome, and given the state they are in (social inequity, deep fractures within the population, and social media enhancing these fractures), I expect it to be very violent.

Just seen that horrible video. She was a mum of 3 young kids. Now, they are orphaned.

International fans are cancelling their tickets and hotels to the World cup now.
We need to do mass boycotts of US goods, holidays, hollywood films, Netfix, foodstuff, restaurant chains and mass protests outside every US embassy and institution around the world.

I heard Brazil football federation are going to have some talks whether it is worth it to participate in this World Cup for safety reasons, after this incident.

I can see an armed struggle escalating in an individual State e.g. Minnesota calls in the National Guard, Walz gives the order to protect the people of Minnesota, the perceived threat to the people is ICE, and somewhere along the way someone opens fire and it is National Guard v ICE.

This would be a flashpoint, within a city, within a State, and I wouldn’t expect a prolonged fight where it would progress to a civil war.

At that point I could see a political solution, as a line would have been crossed and enough politicians might come together to meaningfully impeach Trump and follow through with justice for him.

Could be wrong. Like everyone else, I’m watching, appalled at what has happened, and concerned for where it might go.

I posted a few days ago about potential boycotts for the World Cup. Half-seriously I wondered out loud if South American teams might boycott due to Venezuela, and European teams might boycott due to Greenland?

As an expat living over here I have been concerned about the potential culture clash for the way that America is policed in many cities, and the approach that the average international fan would have to the World Cup, along the lines of ‘I’m here to have a good time, drink a beer, sing my songs, and watch my team.’

In a much lesser example, I saw the culture clash when I went to watch a pre-season friendly when Liverpool played Dortmund a few years ago. It was at Notre Dame in Indiana, the state where I now live. Jamie Webster was in his pomp, leading the fans in a good old sing-song in the fan zone before the match. It was a great memory and bonding experience for me and my lad.

The police, visible, and heavily armed, were watching on, non-plussed and not getting it. Not a smile, nothing. Just watching.

It was just a friendly, and there was no aggro whatsoever. It was a joyous occasion, but as a law-abiding person who pays my taxes and has never so much as had a speeding ticket, the police presence felt a little sinister to me.

It made me wonder that in a game with a bit more on it, and perhaps then adding in some disappointed fans who had had a drink but were definitely not rioting - would the police be a reassuring and calming presence, helping to keep things safe, and civil? Or would they be more likely to interpret something minor as a big threat, and then meet it with considerable force?

Unfortunately, of the two choices, I would have to go with the latter.

I am invited to a family wedding in Los Angeles in August. I have now declined in the best possible way :grimacing:. I said I would look after the Bride’s grandma as she cannot travel due age and health issues, it is a too long a flight for Auntie. Also, i don’t feel it is safe for me with the passport stamps I have.

The bride’s mum and all her family are from Ealing way, they have issues too, they have to apply for a separate visa as they have been to Iraq a few times. The bride’s mum wants at least some of her family at the wedding which is understandable.

Trump has made everything difficult for people to see relatives as well.

Honestly @Maria I unfortunately do not think this is an over reaction. Even if you get through immigration without your iraq stamps raising concern, being a brown woman with an accent is unfortunately sufficient to get you into trouble now, despite that being a clear violation of the constitution.

My social media is also anti-Trump. :see_no_evil_monkey: Last time, I was in the US was 2006, there was a problem with my finger ID. I was asked alot more questions than usual. I had to put my finger in this machine for the machine to read it and it couldn’t recognise it. I told the immigration officer at the time that i work in a lab, where hand washing was frequent, then he was alright about it.

I am scared to travel to the US now. Times were different then, immigration were still quite reasonable to talk to.

Even my cousins in the US say “don’t come”. Three of them are lucky and have duel passports (:canada:+:us_outlying_islands:).

One question. What are the US opposition parties doing about what is happening? They seem silent or sleeping

The Dems are not in power and have no capacity to do anything other than pose rhetorical opposition. The question should instead be asked of the Republicans in congress who are the ones who have the power to reign in a presidential despot going to war with his own citizens.
