I don’t disagree with what you said Limie but the quote from above isn’t helpful either. I thought it was over the pail so I put my two cents in. Silencing or banning the opposition party is not the answer.
*or beyond the pale. Whatever that dumb phrase is lol
You can’t have a civil society when the rule of law isn’t respected. There is a reason the social contract necessitates denigration (social exclusion) or banning (aka imprisonment) of those who refuse to meet the basic requirements. MAGA are doing precisely this and necessitate this treatment if we are not to end up with a fascist autocracy.
This is along the lines of the conversation i should have with the work colleague I mentioned. He’s big on obeying thr law, until it doesn’t suit his wants. Hard luck, just like the non existent Brexit he didnt get, but voted for.
From a distance they appear non existent, bar a couple of notable exceptions. I dont know how you recover from that, especially when the “rules” that get you into office are diminishing. I think their opportunity is shrinking.
Whenever I hear that phrase now I reflexively think of Fergie complaining that Van Persie could have been killed by Ashley Williams. That was peak Fergie misdirection
In principal I agree, but I think in this specific case this is closer to a conversation on what is the appropriate way to deal with someone who only wants to lob a shit grenade into a situation and then walk away.
You quoted me.
Lime thankfully replied to your reply. Reiterating my position.
Nowhere did I ask for censorship, that’s not my place however I did note your tone toward me accusing me of things I didn’t even imply or utter.
You invoked intelligence when the original post that started all this was devoid of intelligence.
I repeat it’s not possible to discuss under such circumstances.
Don’t be silly.
However those that commit crimes should.
Both Democrats and Republicans should argue for the rule of law to be upheld then MAGA wouldn’t go to their extreme nonsense.
I was responding to Dalglish and quoting him - sorry for any confusion. I simply replied to you as you replied to me when I quoted Dalglish - and it was Dalglish who seems to be recommending jailing anyone who supports MAGA. Sorry for any confusion.
OK my apologies. Nothing I said was aimed at you specifically. I was trying to make the generic point that if we can’t all be civil with each other what chance do we have?
When is the last time we have put on a military parade? I saw it’s going to cost something like 45 mil - 15 mil of which is to repair the roads after the tanks chew them up.
There are multiple things working against a coherent Democrat response.
There is no leader of the opposition sort of mechanism, and with various members vying for greater relevance, and a possible future Presidential run, it seems splintered.
The actual party platform is splintered too. You have energetic progressives like Sanders and AOC who will put in the hours to engage with people, and generally they are offering policies and positions that many/most people want. But they are not fully embraced by the Democrat Party, and there still remains an old-school/old-farts element within the party that has too much power.
The Republicans appear to own the means of transmission, for the message. In the last election Elon Musk deployed a $44B megaphone and spewed lies onto every phone screen, and moved the masses that way. Joe Rogan is the largest podcast and he enabled MAGA too. And the usual right wing media dominated in their space too, to say nothing of the various new news channels that carry extreme right wing propaganda.
Elon Musk’s own voice was significant too.
Republican lying is now so ingrained that, as Limie said above, an alternate reality has indeed been created.
I really don’t know what the answer is to all of the above, but, regrettably, I do agree with the conclusion that the opportunity for the Dems to hold sway and get back in is diminishing.
Someone new, or something new, will have to come along, because the status quo has been trampled.
