Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

I guess. Who the f finds that appealing?
Oh well, doesn’t change much for Europe in the long term/bigger picture, maybe bought some breathing time before the circus goes on.

It’s interesting to see that in France and Germany, a discussion is starting about boycotting the next world cup, for political reasons. I don’t think that we’ll come to it (although, who knows what other provocations that fat turd in Washington will invent from now until the summer…), but it’s still good to see politicians from right and left starting to raise this idea.

This is the basis for the door to door sweeps they told us was a hysterical thing to suggest they would do - just going around a neighborhood looking for people they think are dodgy, a clear constitutional violation

This is Stasi shit, but by dumb people.

This is a good piece showing that the attacks on universities started with identifying the target then figuring out what to go after them for

I think this is the central core of this admin and can explain even his absurd frustration with the Norwegian government. He doesnt just think the PM is lying about the Nobel prize being independent from government influence. He cannot conceive of a government, or more specifically the head of the government, not exerting influencing actions that they should not be involved in. If he was the Norwegien PM he would ensure the prizes go to his friends so assumes that IS what is happening.

At home, he is not so much getting even with his enemies, using the same tactics they used in a if they broke the norms then we will too sense. Its that he never believed these were really norms and that he was targeted because that is just how any normal people would run government and so he’s just doing normal government with these sorts of actions.

Unfortunately the Wired article is behind paywall. This is indeed a scary situation with the imperialism uniting the factions.

Some much needed comic relief…

She was a sideline reporter.

Michele: Coach, what do you need to do differently in the second half?
Coach: Well, we need to keep going and execute better
Michele: Thank you, coach
Viewer: Wow, she really understands leadership. She should run for US Senate

Yeah, honest and telling it like it is, except when it comes to mentioning she’s a Republican candidate. Not once.

Yep, it’s a sham. Rogues gallery would be too kind. It’s basically a way to carve up Gaza and get your nose in the trough early on.

Arguably Trump is also hoping it serves as another forum/platform for countries to come together, as an alternate to existing structures that are in place. He wants to rule, and he’s got no chance of having that sort of sway at the UN, G7, NATO, etc.

There’s a very long list of things to go after Trump for, but the hypocrisy of saying he wants to rule the roost in his own back yard, and then getting entangled in the Middle East for financial gain, is glaring.

Edit:
As ever, I think the Epstein files are a huge problem for him. Only 1% of the docs have been released. He is openly defying the law. Congress needs to grow a backbone and force this toward transparency.

Three huge things - Venezuela, ratcheting up ICE activity, and Greenland - have unfolded in an attempt to direct attention away from Epstein.

He’s desperate to keep it from coming out.

They seem to be doing a pretty good job of it thus far.

En plus , have you heard about the connection Michael Wolff is trying to make between Melania , her modelling agency , and supplying girls to Epstein ?

Yep. Melania is probably worse than being merely the grifter most see her as.

I think Epstein had first dibs there before Trump, but she found a way to ingratiate herself with that whole group. Ugh. Allegedly of course.

It shows that power and force works and that it is literally the only thing that works with Trump.

I don’t know that’s it. I think it’s a case of giving Trump the optics he wants, the optics of pushing someone and them coming back to give him a “deal”. Of course, its just optics for morons, where the details of the deal are unimportant and all that matters is the ability to publicly claim you got a deal. See “ceasefire in Gaza.” It’s mostly kayfaybe. And while people can look for themselves and evaluate whether Trump and/or the US got anything out of it, he doesnt care and assumes no one else will care. They will just care about the headline and hearing him say he got a deal. Unfortunately, when it comes to the American electorate that is largely true.

Some interesting discussions going on in Canadian electrical utility circles (management and union) - with the size of the ice storm that is about to pound the US, their utilities are likely to be in crisis by the weekend. Some of the states expecting major snowfall and/or ice still have very fragile infrastructure due to Helene in 2024, and most of them don’t have winter-resilient (viz. Texas blackouts). In the past, the big Canadian utilities would be major contributors to the repair and reconstruction efforts, and they are accustomed to taking some steps in advance.

This time, there are two notable points:

  1. Some of the unions are pushing back on crossing the border at all, and/or demanding some assurances. Some workers are supposedly unwilling to leave the border states, which are generally the ones where there are ongoing relationships and directly connected grids.

  2. Normally, FEMA is getting out ahead of these situations, polling for numbers and availability, looking at which utilities are likely to have surplus line crew capacity. That apparently just has not happened.
