Aye. Big storm coming. With the wind it will feel like -25/30C here tomorrow morning. Not sure I’d play golf in it!
We are currently predicted to be north of the ice, but my son at college is going to get that. I told him not to drive in it and hopefully there are local conditions where he is that prohibit driving anyway, if it comes to it.
Snowfall predictions for Sat/Sun are still all over the place here, as we might just be in a band that doesn’t get too much, but the slightest shift north of the Tennessee Valley will see us get whacked.
Texas is probably going to get hit hard and they are unprepared, as the last time showed.
Trump has hollowed out expertise in numerous areas of government, and he has also made enemies out of friends, so these things are going to hit a lot harder than they otherwise might.
The states which need help from Canadian workers during emergencies ,can/should they not guarantee by force if necessary , their safety from ICE agents etc?
Considering how the Korean workers (aka foreigners, aliens, not white) help setting up the Hyundai plant as investment in the US, got arrested and detained last time, I would say “Don’t bet on it”.
Every asian carmaker looked at that and said ‘hmmm, do we really need a plant out there?’ GM were probably thrilled, but that kind of shithousery is not going to do much for the old GDP.
That air is rolling through here now, dropping just a little under a degree per hour. It was -3 C this morning, by tomorrow night it is supposed to be -29C (with the high winds, probably feel like -40C or worse - frost bite warning in effect for tomorrow). We have had snow squalls as that cold Arctic air hits the warmer air that was here yesterday. I have no doubt this is going to carry deep into the US.
I was living in NC in 1993 when that huge blizzard hit, and it was startling how devastating it was. Due to the high ice content, this one will likely be worse.
I have some business/investment interests in Canada and talk to people over there on a weekly basis. The resentment they feel towards the US is very real and very un-Canadian in my experience. Everyone I’ve spoken to is fully behind the unoffical boycotting of US goods, the sort that has forced huge bourbon distilleries in the US to pause production. So reluctance to help or cooperate with the US in emergecnies is understandable. It’s hard to comprehend the stupidity of the US government’s aggressive 51st State approach to Canada ,which has only succeeded in driving it into a huge trade deal with China.
When contacted about it, their official response was “the memes will continue”.
What this administration doesnt seem to understand is that when the public views a government so running wild, juries have a tendency to completely disregard evidence presented in court and just acquit people in response to a government acting unjustly.
That is an ICE agent acting purely out of a desire to punish people opposing them and has nothing to do with law enforcement. It is state sponsored terrorism and torture of US citizens. There is no way that juries who have previously seen images of ICE/DHS acting like will think any indictment brought against anyone related to ICE actions would be legit.
ICE forcefully entered the home of a US citizen and took him out in his underwear despite it being about -20 degrees C at the time. They claimed it was justified because it was a targeted arrest of an illegal immigrant sex offender (ignoring that he is a fucking Citizen).
There was a “scandal” towards the end of the campaign over when Biden used the word supporters whether he meant “supporters” or “supporter’s” - was he talking about the people or how the people were acting. Both are equally viable interpretations for his comment, in what was a clunkily constructed sentence. The initial transcript reported it as “supporters” but shortly after when the white house released their version, the official version, it was reported as “supporter’s”, thus clarifying the comments were about the actions of his supporters (this was in response to a Trump surrogate going on a racist screed about not wanting immigrants in the country, something that he included Puerto Ricans among even though they are US Citizens). . There was a media freak out of over the sanctity of official public records with no one acknowledging that there was ambiguity in the statement and the initial transcript from the stenographer could not have possibly known which version was correct, but the white house would and so deference should be given to the second version.
People are now pretending to believe that there is a commonality between that “scandal” and this unambiguously illegal act by DHS
