Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

The comments posted afterwards are … interesting. :see_no_evil_monkey:

It’s like they are actually children.

Even life and death, holds no gravity for them.
It is , (I don’t know if you have heard of them, there was this message board that was popular with teens a while back, and it had a lot of members who were AltRight) as if shitposters from 4Chan have taken over the White House. Which is remarkable but also very sad. Most of the 4Chan people have grown up ( I used it once in a while too, to pirate-download books many years ago, though I never frequented the political shitposter wing), but to me it seems that some of them are now in charge of America. They have certainly not “grown up”.

He’s like the president from the Hunger Games. Sitting around ordering people to be killed or go on suicide missions

Several of us have been talking about the 4Chaning of the Republican party staffer class for over a decade now, and its gone on long enough that those first generation are now old enough to be in senior positions, maybe even elected positions.

There is a thing doing the rounds now about how Trump has been buying all the men in his inner circle the same shoe that he wears. It’s a brand store totally unremarkable shoe, which is part of what makes this funny. But the better bit is he paid no attention to sizing so they all have totally the wrong size and are wearing them anyway. for fear of upsetting him

Yeah, I know. I have read those posts (some of them at least).

But I wasn’t sure if Mascot had. He is not here often (maybe he is, but he doesn’t say much), so I included references for him, in case he didn’t know what it was etc.

But sure, unecessary information probably

Yes this is moronic. But the best bit about this he was clearly told to call it an incursion instead of a war and because he’s a moron he said excursion, like he’s fucking Merry and Pippin chasing after Sam and Frodo

I always thought with an excursion the school/carers would have to send a permission slip, whereas with an incursion they need not. Has Donny got his permission slip signed? That’s the follow up question the reporter needed.

maybe hes right though.

you make an excursion from Merica, to make in incursion in Iran…

this is as good a place as any…

but what does the term ‘America’ derive its name from? i understand the ‘United states’ moniker, but regarding north and south, and how the USA simple refers to itself as ‘America’

and is there a relationship in the language to the ancient Mercia?

funnily enough, if no one can answer this question i will probably still sleep OK tonight.

named after an italian explorer apparently, Amerigo Vespucci

America comes from Amerigo di Vespucci, who was the guy who figured out what Columbus had actually found.

How the US became ‘America’ is really a function of the US being the first independent state in America (the idea that there are two continents is a 19C thing, and is not shared with the Spanish speaking world).

cheers lads.

so technically it should be the united states of amerigo…

i assume the Ca is the english version of the go?

A map was made Latinizing it to Americus, and then a decade later that was translated to Spanish as America (around 1520 as I recall)

Or the joke was that there was a Chinese cook on one of the boat in the Columbus fleet… When the crew yelled about sighting of the land, the cook went up to the deck and said in Cantonese “乜嘢嚟㗎” (which means “What is it?”, phonically mat1 je5 lai4 gaa3), thus Merica" is named.
