I think we may be seeing the real issue at hand…DOGE was a complete and utter failure on its own terms. Where it cut, the savings were trivial in terms of the overall budget, but massively impacted services and productivity. Whether that is because of incompetence (an overinflated view of his own genius that causes him to underestimate the complexity of problems he knows little about) or that it was all a shell game allowing him to do something else while getting all this government access, what people are realizing is that it did fuck all to the budget. This break up seems likely just a way to put the blame on Trump rather than have to face up to his project not delivering what was promised.

I think the other dynamic is that the sheer incompetence of DOGE was creating massive blowback (for the reasons you outline). It was becoming very clear that Trump was happy to let Musk be the scapegoat, and allow other WH figures to target him
