As bad as the Switzerland one is, the one I find most offensive is Brazil. It is political interference involving a judicial process, not coincidentally around an attempt to seize power akin to January 6. Canada and Brazil have had some thorny trade relations, but I will be looking for some cachaca this weekend.
I think that it is the pharmaceuticals, followed by luxury products like watches etc.
Edit: @Noo_Noo , checked it. Pharmaceuticals is 60%, folllowed by technical products (machines etc.) (20%) and watches (8%).
I saw some figures. $35billion in pharmaceuticals. $5.5billion in watches. Similar in precious stones. Chocolate is high.
The US healthcare sector would pick up the drugs bill, unless there are obvious alternatives. The luxury items are a bigger hit, because there are alternatives to Rolex, Toblerone and cuckoo clocks.
I suppose they could always retaliate and burn the billionaire’s money.
Yup , and has absolutely fuck all to do with trade. Why isn’t there uproar about what his stated motives are ? Imagine for one moment if any other powerful country in the world sought to interfere and impose its will on a lesser sovereign country in this way. There would be outrage and universal condemnation , but as far as anyone is concerned with Trump this is presumably perfectly acceptable behaviour now.
Here around, it’s not considered normal.
Even conservative politicians don’t hold back with their contempt and detestation of Trump and co, and are tearing our federal government apart for its inability to handle these idiots in a more efficient way.
As for the media, they are currently having a field day against the US’ increasingly erratic ways, and how they can’t and shouldn’t be trusted anymore, going forward.
It’s time now to stop the procedure of buying the F-35s imo, and to seriously reflect on how keeping US firms out of our national markets. Also time to increase cooperation with the EU. They at least have a clearly recognisable economic policy.
Perhaps anyone in the US. Elsewhere, there is genuine hatred stirring. The US may now be one of the most isolated countries in the world, barring Israel and Myanmar. A 9/11 today would probably be met with an indifferent sigh among America’s former allies, and outright glee through much of the world.
Every time I see this smirking fuckers expression… it reminds me it is similar to the Cat with a cream flavoured arsehole…
Smugness personified…
What alternative do you have for Toblerone?
There’s none, only Toblerone is Toblerone!
I was actually talking specifically about reaction in the US. Trump already had to usurp the powers of Congress to get agency on the tariffs and is already facing serious pushback in federal court for giving the laughable defence of ‘national emergency’. But , even that only applies to trade disputes , and as he’s openly admitted , this has absolutely nothing to do with trade.
PBS and NPR now shutting down due to abrupt end of funding. No more public broadcaster. With NPR in particular, that is a real loss.
…and he is firing the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics because he did not like the numbers today
Probably because it drowns in uproar over something closer to home. The thing is, everyone is fighting to get their uproar to be the big thing. But there are so many uproars and Big Things. Exhausting.
So in a way, Trump is shielded by the countless outrageous policies, meaning focus is hard and particularly when you consider how the global media works with News Agencies selling stories to newspapers and TV.
Numbers don’t lie. Trump does
Darn it. There goes my Friday morning coffee with PBS spacetime ritual.
Basically cut the public off from any meaningful data so that their lies can’t be conclusively refuted.
Annie Farmer is one of the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse who publicly came forward to share her experience, including being lured to Epstein’s New Mexico ranch when she was 16 years old. She has spoken about how much pain could have been prevented if authorities had listened and paid attention earlier. Farmer testified at the Ghislaine Maxwell trial and described how Maxwell’s presence initially made her feel she would be safe around Epstein, though she was groped by both. She has also expressed the emotional challenges of revisiting the abuse publicly and has been involved in efforts to help others heal from similar trauma.
The US has a substantial trade surplus with Brazil. If there was ever a defense of his doctrine that people pretended to believe, the Brazil case should blow it up for ever. Trump may have come into his ideas on tariffs, as bad as they are, through an authentic attitude on international trade, but its clear that as President their main value to him are to punish and reward over whatever issue he cares about in the moment. It is thoroughly absurd that the kabuki theatre continues of trying to pretend that any of this is remotely defensible.
Mr president, the answer you were looking for was “no”
