With the slight modification that it is really the oversea territories that Denmark stole from us, that Norwegian nationalists wants back. There isnât actually a Norwegian nationalism that wants Denmark proper as such
Thats what they all say
Our territorial âgrievancesâ are mainly Greenland, the Faroese Island, Herjedalen in Sweden and Jemtland in Sweden (note, I am talking about a tiny minority that takes this stuff very seriously, as most Norwegians are not walking around with great sadness in their hearts due to this).
Norwegian nationalists have a tendency to accept the peace pact with the King of Scots from 1266 (though they grumble about Shetland due to the cultural heritage and what was long Norse language surviving there, but they do accept all the rest ), but the modern age territorial losses to Denmark and Sweden are not accepted by nationalists for historical reasons that I shall not go into details about.
Iceland is accepted by Norwegian nationalists with a ânodâ that they fought bravely against the king and certainly deserved their colony and independence. Also, their language and culture preservation is greatly admired (practically by all Norwegians, not just Nationalists), as it has not been tainted by Danish.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk about Norwegian Nationalism.
Ps. But youâll see a funny reaction when outsiders (non-Scandinavians) attack Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and to a degree, also Finland. Because then we are suddenly brothers. Only we are allowed to loath our brothers and there is an instinctual defensive reflex (there should be academic studies on it tbh) in Scandinavians if outsiders (like Americans), attack our âbrothersâ. They are ours to loath, no one else is allowed to mock them. And this latter reflex is shared, perhaps peculiarly, not just by Nationalists, but across the political spectrum. It is a Scandinavian cultural thing. Iâm probably guilty of it too. Itâs deeply ingrained culturally tbh.
There are still traces of Norn in Shetland Scots, but culturally, there is still a strong DNA that runs through the culture and folklore (and not just Up Helly Aa which is more of a modern festival)
I forgot to mention the Orkney Isles (when Harald HardrĂ„de invaded England in 1066, the Sagas tells us that he came with 150 ships to the Orkneyâs and Jarl Thorfinn the Mighty (Jarl of the Orkneys) then provided a 100 ships more, just to reinforce how important this now almost forgotten island was culturally and politically in the Middle Ages). Thatâs like Shetland, also leads to grumbling, since it was considered a âCoreâ territory
Of course, the Sagas sometimes exaggerate numbers of ships (certainly approximates to closest whole number), but the point is that it was important and very Norse.
Yeah, the Scottish Governmentâs is prone to that as well. Particularly if itâs windy.
Sincerely, thanks for the chuckle ! My cat jumped and left the sofa
She is fine now, but reacted like I started up the unholy vacuum cleaner, though without screaming for me to open the door so she can flee (she always does that when I start the vacuum cleaner).
Identity politics is bad, but my only lens through which I can understand politics is one of identity.
I think it is savvy to ascribe motivations and fault to a person or group based on the identity I assign to them and how critical I am of other people to whom I have also ascribed that same identity.
Bildt: Trump told Merz that the conversation between Witkoff and Putin was more productive than expected
There will be no US sanctions and Trump has agreed to meet Putin in person next week. As expected and as foretold by anyone who is not utterly naive. Mentally tiring to follow these news, as many who report them, seems to take the theatre seriously. Hard to fathom that no one ever learns.
Trumpâs Low Brow strategy is to target the Brics to punish Russia and drive a wedge between the BRICS states. Itâs so incredibly dense. Even if oil prices fell to 30 dollar, Russia would not collapse all of a sudden like some idiots claim. The collapse would come a year or two later down the line. Russia is on full War Economy. It does not stop all of a sudden, just means that the pain afterwards become greater, but Kreml has calculated this pain and is willing to suffer it for territorial and political gain.
These real estate dealers in the US think they are dealing with transactional businessmen, but they are dealing with an ideologically driven empire in reality.

I hate to be pedantic, but I was born that way, so thereâs nothing I can do about it, however this thread seems to be straying away from US politics and into global issues via, weirdly, Scandinavian squabbling.
Yeah, it can happen. I am honestly sorry that it bothers you so much. Not the intention to derail (actually, I admit that my one post about the weather and the summer was very intentional derailment, as I considered it a bit mentally healthy to get some space from Toroâs bitching), but as you know, when someone says A), often it feels natural to respond with B) and then it can go on for 4-5 posts.
I donât mind you reminding us and me, just have some patience and understanding that some of us can be a bit easily derailed. Mean no harm.
In any case, the Scandinavian curio stuff was finished
Edit: Not that I agree with your global issues comment. That is US politics in my view. Itâs odd if foreign policy is anathema in a thread regarding US politics. If so, then everything regarding tariffs ought to have been disallowed, as an example.
But there is a global politics thread, and when it goes too deep into what one Russian said what to which German, itâs straying.
I am guilty myself, of course.
I am pleased to see that you have finally been able to self reflect.

This will certainly please China. I suppose some of you may remember that the current US admin was elected on a pivot to Asia platform (as well as isolationism, but their intellectuals was all about âwe have to stop China asapâ) , headed by a certain Think Tank intellectual called Eldbridge Colby (whom I may have criticised in this thread a few times previously), who championed abandoning Ukraine to fully focus on defending Taiwan and stymying the Red Dragon. Now Mr. Colby, now in a position of âpowerâ, has to defend (which he has done in latter months) this peculiar strenghtening of the very same Red Dragon, which is the very opposite of what he was in favour of intellectually before he joined the admin.
Smells like some serious corruption (grift), given that it does not make any sense; at all.
