Last week a remarkably through housing bill was passed through both chambers with almost universal bispartisan support. It is designed to modernize regulations related to building and financing of new homes. Bills like this just dont get passed anymore. Yet Trump has now cancelled a signing event and is signalling he might even veto it.

As I said in summer 2024, people were missing the real message in Vance’s attacks on the Ohio Haitian community. The point to focus on was not the racism or the lying about the problems the people were causing. It was the refual to accept the people he was demeaning had legal status. His continued portrayal of these people as “illegals” was a clear signal that removal of status was not just on the table but was an objective.

What is being celebrated here by foreign visitors are the large blue cities that the rest of us were already fans of. It was Trump and the right who claim that these are hell holes, with Trump personally repeatedly threatening to reassign host cities away from these liberal hell holes that are too dangerous for people to travel to. These are not just blue cities, but at least 3 of them are either run by “socialist” boogeymen (NYC and Boston) or the city itself is a boogeyman (Seattle).
Not even Trump’s harshest critic, or even those of the organization of this world cup, would have argued that for people with the money to come and who get into the country without issue, that those visitors would not have a good time in the host cities (except Atlanta, that is shit)

There is so much wrong with America that it’s hard to keep up with it. New depths are being plumbed by Trump and everyone in his orbit, at a frightening rate. If we do get another free and fair election (or mostly, at least) he needs to be soundly defeated and ejected.
While all that continues to play out and we see the damage being caused, I just want to echo a point about the World Cup. Before the tourney we were seeing the ref kicked out and people not getting visas and so on. I was fearing the worst.
But the people of the world have come, and they have encountered some good Americans as their hosts, and the main impression I am getting is that things are as they should be and everyone is having a good time. Long may that continue.
It is doing a lot of good to aid better relations, despite the idiots running the country.
