Its going to be spectacular and he is going to be so, so enthralled.
The primary in the Dem party for the Senate in Michigan is a pretty contentious 3-way race. It was supposed to be between the establishment DNC/AIPAC backed candidate (Stephens) and the insurgent McMorrow in the lefty/resist lib lane who made a national name for herself Michigan state politics for the way she responded to Trump 1. But she has now been outflanked on the left by Abdul El Sayid, the former chief public health official of Detroit and Wayne county who is very much out of the Bernie mold, but also being Arab introduces a whole new dimension to the race.
El Sayid is an MD/PhD by training who left medicine during one of his residencies. It is an open part of his biography that he got disillusioned with medicine during one of his residencies after experiencing first hand how little they were able to do to help poor people. He decided he could make more impact by focusing on public health and finding ways to improve access so quit his residency, leaving medicine entirely, and went into academia then public service as a public health official. That means he is qualified as a doctor, but not licenced to practice.
He recently, surprisingly, jumped to the lead in a bunch of primary polls and that coincided with Politico breaking a fake doctor āscandalā about him claiming he has knowingly misrepresented himself by talking about being a doctor (he is) and his experience being a doctor (which are real). Part of the scandal is some of his campaign material from his last run for office (MI governor) had him in a white coat, which is totally normal and not at all a misrepresentation. I get that for many people becoming a doctor and then never actually doctoring is confusing, but for me coming from a background of academia and clinical research, the existence of MD/PhDs who never used their MD qualification to practice medicine is not remotely uncommon. And all of these people would refer to themselves as a doctor with most if not all having actual doctor experience from their training.
Itās difficult to know whether this hit piece was driven by his pro-palestine stance or his medicare for all stance.
