At the risk of being precious, I don’t think “retard” should be used by anyone in an open discussion. I’m not calling for any action, just reflection. My beautiful innocent young son is autistic and has an intellectual disability - using that word as a slur or an insult is lazy at best.

I want to offer a personal apology for sometimes using that word in English.
It is careless and thoughtless. I cannot guarantee it won’t happen again (it probably will if I am emotional about something). I used to be more careful with that word only a few years ago precisly because I don’t want to hurt “innocent bystanders”, and it is no longer regarded as precise in medicine anyway. But as I have read the word more and more often in English in latter years, I slip up more and more.
In Norwegian verbal communication, we tend to use the word “tilbakeståande” to refer collectively to intellectually challenged individuals still, which essentially means the same (directly translated to “backwards/retarded”). But it is imprecise and too general. And of course, often it will be used as an insult (just like stupid is)…
But I very much understand how you feel and I am sorry if you have read me use it in the past. It is very imprecise. And I will strive to not use it here
