This is an Englandcentric response to I’m bringing it to this thread…

Sure the whole point of this approach is that it is difficult to break down and create against, but you can still critique the way an opposition goes about the task of trying to do that even in the context of not expecting it to create many clear chances. England’s approach to that challenge was poor.

The thing is though I don’t think Tuchel will be losing sleep over it. Gordon and Anderson were not the right selections for this sort of challenge and when you see how lackluster the response to Ghana’s challenge was it is understandable eyes would start turning to some of the more creative players on the bench or even those left at home. But I imagine Tuchel believes it isn’t games like this, against sides who play like this, that will provide the defining challenge to England at this tournament. I imagine he has been far more focused on what it will take to get past a Spain or Brazil and it’s against sides like that who will expect to have a lot more of the ball and play more on the front foot that some of these selections seem better suited for.
