It is the physical and especially mental side that is the issue.
I was happyish up until we scored, we were controlling Argentina without creating too much, my criticism is all after we scored, we were objectively pathetic.
Just watching Adam Cleary’s appraisal of the game, just look at our pass completion after the 1st substitutions.
My take is that one position needs to be replaced: P(r)ickford, who clearly is a weak spot in that team.
Otherwise, the quality is there, especially if you think about some genuine quality players who weren’t included this time, and I’m quite sure that you’ll enjoy a good tournament again in two years.
One thing though: Tuchel is still not a world class coach. Sorry about that…
I get that to others England fans can be annoying, but this has been an incredibly consistent 8 year spell now with multiple semis and two finals. It is totally reasonable I think that after a period like this there is an expectation of taking that next step. Especially after you bring in the high priced foreign manager who will show you new winning ways for football.
Add in that they earned themselves a very strong position in that match and then pissed it away. Argentina responded excellently to the change in the dynamic of the game. But it was a dynamic gifted to them by England’s cowardice than because they wrestled that level of control. Given all that England fans for once do have every reason to complain about this not being good enough.
Agree with this. I can understand losing their nerve in terms of being brave on the ball and killing Argentina’s momentum for a couple of minutes here and there. The England midfielders don’t really have that type of DNA, and the ones who perhaps do weren’t in the squad. Thinking of Foden and Wharton.
However, basic things like closing down a shooter, not allowing as many crosses, controlling the Argentina players arriving in the box and winning the headers. That should have been doable.
Tuchel gets the blame for it, but I also think the players forgot to do the basic things. Nobody seemed to take responsibility. They were just there, allowing the game to happen to them, unable to affect it.
I also think there’s a chicken and egg type of thing, that Tuchel maybe saw how the players reacted to the situation, and therefore made the decision to make the game as simple as possible for them: defend the final third. Which didn’t help, and maybe made things worse.
We obviously can’t know this because we can’t see it, but I suspect yesterday was more about psychology and collective mentality than about tactics.
No proper captain, Kane is just a plastic one, need someone like Hendo, too old to be playing but barking orders and taking control onfield.
I have seen some of Tuchels post match comments in regards to England not having the DNA of teams like Spain etc. In being able to control games with the ball and therefore become negative in all aspects and drop deep thinking it is the best option, when it takes bravery.
He also mentioned that looking at the mental response by the players to us scoring, no coach could change it.
To me, what summed up last nights collapse, was the fact the Argies were confident enough to bring on Otamendi with 20mins to go to marshal their defence…!
Otamendi for f**ks sake
They never looked like anywhere close to panic mode.
They played with a belief that they were going to at least equalise.
Tuchel on the other hand.
Dan fucking Burn
I dont think its unreasonable to suggest that about these players, especially the ones who ended up on the pitch. But these arent the players he had to use. These are the players he chose to use, and he built his team to suffer through games, not to win them with football. In his defense, england isnt overflowing with footballers who are capable of showing bravery by wanting and keeping the ball, and those we do have weren’t in great form. I have sympathy for him in that regard, but he needs to own his part of this.
As mentioned he wasn’t brave enough to try and change it.
I do think even if he had taken the right players that do have the bravery, I am not sure that they would be established enough within the team to grab the bull by the horns and get some semblance of control.
I, as many others think, it is time to say out with the old and in with the new, Kane shouldn’t be captain and Pickford has to go.
We need to develop a team that as the ability and culture to not to go into their shell at the crucial stages of tournaments.
It is bewildering that Tuchel is saying the players were doing it without his instruction, and the players are saying they didn’t understand the tactics
