England National Team

It is apparently still too difficult for some to look at the whole thing from the outside. Of the participating nations in this European Championship, only 3 countries had English as their mother tongue, so out of 24 participants no English is spoken in 21 countries. Most of the people in these countries simply don’t care about the lyrics of a song, they don’t know anything about the background and only react to what they hear and see at the moment. And they can only see what is shown in the media and on the internet in their countries. The pictures that are conveyed there then get stuck. Unfortunately, what was shown was mostly negative, I don’t want to go into it any further.

And yet you keep bringing it up?

Perhaps you don’t want to go into it further because you know it’s utter rubbish?

I do agree with your post, I’m not saying it’s the sole reason. In fact, all I’m doing is explaining the negative perception of “Three Lions” by foreign fans.

Personally, I did not know it was meant to be an ironic song until it was explained somewhere else on this forum. Once I learned that I gained a much better appreciation for it. I can thus see both sides, and especially since if not for that explanation of the song, I would not have thought about it differently.

This is the perspective of most foreign fans, who don’t have the benefit of having this explanation. It is much easier to react to the song, than to actually understand the background, particularly with the context you’ve provided in your post. So why should anyone be surprised that it engenders the reaction that it does?

Not aimed at you Livvy, but don’t you think there should be some self reflection in some of the other countries, including Germany? Not like we don’t have or have had many of the same issues.

I’m sorry you feel so fragile about this. The only one constantly bringing it up at the moment is you. If you don’t want to look at @Limiescouse’s post in conjunction with mine to understand, and choose to feel insulted, then no one can help you, really.

It’s not exactly James Joyce in terms of the accessibility of its meaning.

Perhaps there should be, but this is the England National Team thread, talking about a specific issue. This discussion does not preclude that self-reflection taking place elsewhere, which is indirectly a point that I am trying (but poorly) to make.

Not really. I am just responding to the unfounded sentiment that people keep bringing up. Eg German Red and Noo Noo. Responding is not the same as bringing it up.

Nope it isn’t. But most people would have heard only the chorus, and would therefore be reacting directly to that.

Which unfounded sentiment to this? And for the record, I don’t think there’s that actually that much that they’ve posted about this.

You literally just have to follow the conversation up about two hours to see where I responded.

I found it funny that out of my local football supporting friend group it was only the blueshite that was calling for Southgate to be sacked straight away, saying you have to be ruthless to win trophies, saying England should follow Chelsea’s way. He shut up when I asked him how well being ruthless worked out for his club

Oh yes we have and other countries as well, what i tried to explain is why this whole thing has been received so immensely negative everywhere. The explanation … but the Lyrics etc. is really not helpful when you look at it from outside.

Are you able to show examples of the song being received so immensely negatively anywhere?

I’m talking specifically about your use of the words “keep bringing up”. As far as I can see, their participation within the last day with regards to this particular topic has been a grand total of 2 posts by @GermanRed and 2 by @Noo_Noo.

@GermanRed has posted more things, but relating to the behaviour of English fans in general rather than the song in particular. Perhaps it’s that that you’re taking offence to.

I’m convinced you’re just being deliberately dumb now.

Person A writes something I disagree with
I respond
Person B writes something I disagree with
I respond
Person C writes something I disagree with
I respond

All are basically about the meaning of the same thing.

If people A and B and C had not brought it up, i’d not even be reading this thread and be scouring the rumours thread for some news about proper football. Hence I am not bringing it up, I am responding.

Of course I could always not. I just don’t like hypocrisy when I see it.

Ok. I just don’t get it personally, but that’s fine.
If the Italians were annoyed by the song, then they gave the proper response on the pitch and with their “It’s coming Rome”. That should’ve been the end of it imo, but ok, agree to disagree.

I think writing it off as a minority is burying our head in sand about the extent of the problem.
