By the way, Britain did not stand alone. It had support from its Empire. The contribution of Australians, Canadians, Indians etc etc should not be forgotten.
Not to belittle the peril the country was in, but let’s give our supporters their due.
on point
Estimated 2m Indians lost their life during ww2. (Including non combatants). And that doesn’t include the lives lost to the famines when Churchill denied food to India in favour of feeding the armies. The count there was 23 million dead.
This is why it bugs me when a small section of English supporters(Or people from any country) decide to go hyper nationalistic…and ignore the ills that their forefathers have done.
The Germans now aren’t to be blamed for whatever atrocities that Hitler has committed. Same way the English now aren’t to be blamed for the ills being committed by their forefathers. It’s high time the section of the Brits realize that their Empire is probably quite guilty of crimes on humanity either and they’ve got no business to be mocking others (least of all for a football match)
So some England fans are bellends. So are some Liverpool fans, some cricket fans, some Terry Pratchett fans. I’m not stopping enjoying my sports and pass-times because some humans are idiots.
And that sir (or madame, best not to assume) is spectacularly well said.
What were the chanes of this thread turning into a historical (which is a little bit larger than only WWII, which was of course a massive period, hopefully never again) one, regardless of the match outcome?
It’s actually only on here that I’ve seen anyone mention the war and I am active on Facebook and Twitter.
That’s what you get for hanging around the Fawlty Towers thread.
Please
keep
politics
out of
this
thread
You enjoy supporting your country and want them to win. I don’t have a problem with that. I’m not saying you can’t support them. Do what you like. I just don’t like the national team.
Is that just in football? For example do you support other english sporting exploits? Olympics, tennis, cricket etc?
The TAW Subscribers thread on FB is kicking off nicely on exactly this subject.
Yeah. Follow Team GB at the olympics etc. Liked Andy Murray as a tennis players. Growing up in a Rugby League town, I always supported GB in the tests and internationals.
There is just something about the football that I can’t get behind.
I wouldn’t say England are the deserved winner. What I will say is Germany are the deserved loser.
Considering the capabilities of both teams it was a bad game. I was very disapointed from the German performance and the English as well. Both Teams can play a better football.
A spanish paper judged it was the worst game of the tournament.
Well, you have my sympathy. The nation coming together behind the team is a wonderful thing to me. Don’t let a few nutters put you off.
The German team never fully recovered from Lahm and Klose retiring. I always imagine Löw having dreams at night where someone like those two magically appears and then waking up slightly annoyed.
when i came back to this thread this morning before work i was surprised that it took such a turn towards politics and history. i am german but footballwise i am an lfc fan and no other club and no country. long story, heres not the place to tell it. but it started in 2002. and i remebered that second of two trips through the english and welsh counrtyside this morning.
to all of you english supporters who (more or less ) were ashamed and annoyed by some people and their statements on twitter & co i want to say thank you.
But i also want to say that these stupid people can never spoil my memories of kindness, helpfulness, friendliness and wit of the common people i had the pleasure to meet. Perhaps it was because i avoided towns and just roamed the countryside. I experienced so much interest, hospitality and support almost every evening in the local pubs or whenever i needed info or advice or a b&b and by my accent i was clearly detectable as a german. ( a sidenote : several old men who definitely were young during the war wanted to explain to me that not all was bad under Hitler. This was tricky for me, but they said it not cause they were nazis, they said it to make me feel easy. i am definitely sure about that and almost always succeeded in switching the topic quite fast )
to make it short : dont feel ashamed by the idiots. here in my hometown i remember the monkey sounds in the grounds when i started to go to games in the late 70ies. it changed when my club signed 2 brilliant players from africa. fans can learn, they can change. the ones who dont are not into football but into hate. we have them, you have them and yours can never ever change my positive feelings towards england and wales, the two countries i visited.
we germans carry a heavy weight and have no one to blame but ourselves for this. it is important to talk about politics, even more important to always study and remember history but when the idiots and haters do it one should turn around and walk away.
in all my time here ( and tia before ) i learned taht ther is a family much bigger than mine, one of lfc fans from all over the world and although i seldom write cause my english gets worse year by year i am here almost daily and never never never felt unwelcome.
all that said, i can not support you in your next games. i want hendo to go on holiday and i dont want to see pickford and sterling cheer
This might be a liverpool fc praising thing. But one thing I’ve noted among liverpool fans (both in liverpool and people staying abroad) is a semblance of empathy. Long may it continue.
If you are an Anfield Wrap subscriber, they did a good bit on England. I think it was the Van Dijk podcast.
I think jurgen pointed out the points in a very respectful and jurgen way.
You can’t have a team whose players haven’t been used to a 3 4 3 just for a tournament. The players except rudiger haven’t been used in a 3 cb defense lineup…
And a 3 cb lineup is alright for taking care of one slow cb in hummels… Not quite the same when you’ve got rudiger with his brainfades who isnt exactly sprightly either… Loew fucked up there…
And by having 4 people in midfield… There was confusion due to the natural play of those midfielders being restricted…
