Cannot meet any of those 3 until the final. The only matches left before the final are against Ukraine and Denmark or Czech Republic
Such an uncanny resemblance.
Using twitter to generalise a country’s citizens? Hmmm.
Of course England’s press is the only national press to get over excited about it’s team’s chances of winning a major tournament isn’t it?
No other country has bigots, racists and a shameful past have they?
This is the problem with nationalism. It’s hard for people to keep emotions in check. Pride not to turn to arrogance etc.
At the end of the day none of us had any control over where we were born. One little different decision and we’d be supporting another country and proud of the culture we inherited.
And nobody HAS to be subjected to abuse on twitter, same as any other social media.
Given what happened at the group stage, it’s unlikely. He played boring football against underdogs in group stage.
I know, i am dreading the next match. They are already going on and on about it as if we already won it.
I have even seen horrible tweets on Chernobyl and Ukraine. Didn’t these idiot fans parents teach their children any sense of decency and mutual respect?
He doesn’t deserve a statue for his media work over the years that’s for sure, but there was equally a lot of OTT projection and pressure on him by the German media almost instantaneously after the victory celebrations in 2014 died down. He was always going to go fall below the unreasonable standards any WCup winning German trainer is held to by the traditionally hypercritical German punditry.
Our overall record against Germany is surprisingly ok.
We’ve played Germany 33 times including yesterday. England has won 14 times, Germany 15 times and there have been 4 draws. Included in those losses are the two eliminations on penalties (1990 and 1996). So after extra time the stats would read 14 wins to England, 13 wins to Germany and 6 draws.
We had a run of good results up to '66 (played 8, won 7, drew 1) and then Germany dominated the next 14 games, winning 10 of them, with 2 England wins and 2 draws).
Since 2000 though we’ve played each other 11 times with 5 wins apiece and 1 draw. Goals for England 15, goals for Germany 13.
Overall England have scored 53 goals and conceded 42 against Germany.

It’s the obsession with “major” tournament football but it could be argued on both sides.
“Germans always show up” - evidently if you look at tournament football they don’t. But try and argue that on a none emotional level and you can’t.
It probably benefits them to play in Rome, removes them from the hype of the English press. This is a fan base that openly boos the actions of its players taking a knee. We had police brutality exposed on our door step in regards a former footballer in Atkinson yesterday.
The fact they don’t have respect for anything is exposed when they go out. It’s going be vile if a black player makes a mistake in a country that pretends it doesn’t have racism.
When Muller was clean through on goal yesterday, after Sterling sloppily gave the ball up with a shit pass, I did think ‘Oh dear. Could have got England knocked out and he’s black. Might be a tough few decades for Raheem if Muller slots this’.
Yeah it’s why I dread penalties.
Tô even think that in 2021 is beyond depressing, as I’ve said I dislike a number of players week in week out but generally I don’t dislike the team or Southgate and credit to them they don’t seem to avoid speaking out and setting an example if they do win it and Johnson invites them number 10 I hope they make the point to him and Dowden what the knee means to them.
Be better if they snubbed them mind after their comments.
Do you really mean that? You actually want England to get knocked out?
Yes. I find the outpouring of xenophobia and nationalism genuinely nauseating. Through the tabloids and England’s hardcore support, there is a deeply unpleasant side to the way England support is expressed.
Look at the booing the knee. Booing opposition side national anthem. Look at the way whenever we play Germany the war analogies and entitlement come out. Look at how the fans rampaged through an IKEA when we beat Sweden last time. Look at the pricks tearing through Amsterdam throwing bikes in the canal and smashing restaurants.
I apologise for generalising, but this doesn’t really happen with the Scots and Welsh to the same extent in my experience.
In fact it doesn’t happen with any other country, although there are echoes of WW2 in Germany’s relationship with every country in Europe. Many were occupied, some were complicit, it’s complicated, and maybe that’s why it doesn’t come up as much. For England (in general), it was a glorious time, a great victory and the last moment when the nation was a major power. There is pleasure to be gained from looking back at the Battle of Britain, D-Day, The bouncing bomb etc. The British even make comedies out of it, some of them are even funny. For the Germans it’s not funny or pleasurable to think about. It’s a dark stain on the country’s conscience, and everyone feels it. There are, of course, nutters on the right, who try to claim that it wasn’t a big deal, but they are firmly in the minority, and long may it remain so.
The British have their own crimes to atone for, and are nowhere near as far along the road to recognition and acceptance as the Germans. Maybe they should be reminded of the slave trade, famines in India and Ireland, opium dealing, and the looting, plundering and pillaging that accompanied the Empire every time they play an international match. That wouldn’t be quite as amusing I’d imagine.
The Fawlty quote was funny at the time, and was meant as a satire on exactly the type of reactionary nostalgia we see now. Unfortunately, it has been twisted and used to do exactly what it warned against. ‘Don’t mention the War’ has become an excuse to mention the war. What about we start saying ‘Don’t mention the Empire’ every time the England team are playing. That would be a laugh.
amazes me how some england fans mention ww2 against the germans when England’s colonial history reakky doesnt show them in good light (for their past actions)
It’s cringeingly embarrassing The best part of it is that the Germans couldn’t give a toss about Ingurland! They usually have bigger fish to fry!
EDIT: It’s like dogs barking at a cat sat on a fence, not giving the first fuck.
Not to go into much detail but it’s probably got the empire and war to blame, English identity comes out post 1945.
The nationalist movements also stirred post 1945 and that probably was aided by the Individualism of the 1980s.
It doesn’t surprise me when you look at the demographics and why we’ve had this backlash at this point in history at what effectively is progressive and common decency.
Maybe why the northern towns of Liverpool and Manchester are different is due to the immigration especially from Ireland.
As someone whose strands of family are Irish and Welsh it’s easy to support all the home nations + Ireland.
In fact I think that’s why I always find 1994 World Cup my most fondly remembered one.
Anyhow sorry for distracting the thread, like the way some American states split or the way the Brexit vote went the pattern of say 200-300 or even 1000 years ago still marks today.
I’m not English so this doesn’t really apply for me but there would be no way I could shout and support the likes of Raheem Sterling (and other rival players) and get all gooey when they score and play well.
Would grate on me
England were the better team and deserved to win, without question.
Running errands this morning I was listening to TalkSport for about 15mins…Bloody Nora, gonna be a lot of egg on a fair few faces if they don’t win it.
Some proper gushing going on.
I sort of see where he is coming from…but I was heartened to see lots of none white faces amongst the England supporters last night. There was an Asian father and young son interviewed after the game on BBC this morning and their evident pride and support for the team was a joy to see, especially the young lad.
I am a simple man. I am Scouse so support Liverpool (yes I know that is not a gimme) and yes I would prefer to see the other lot win stuff than clubs from other cities.
I am English so I support the English football, rugby and cricket teams. If England are not directly involved I support the other British nations and also Ireland.
I am a Lancastrian so I support Lancashire cricket.
I am not ashamed to say I was up off my sofa celebrating both goals last night. I am not going to allow a very small minority of idiots to dilute my support for my country. When England play I suspend my tribal prejudice against other clubs players. When they play for England they are my players and I don’t apologise for that. I am of the 66 generation.
Regards the WW2, It’s still fresh in the memory as a lot of people are still alive. It’s easy to see why it’s a war that Britain can be proud of fighting as opposed to other wars. There’s no question it was about defeating an evil man and an evil regime. At one point Britain stood alone in Europe against Hitler and his henchmen.
Other wars fought are generally fought because of murky political double dealing, etc.
I don’t think any country is a panecea of peace and happiness. That is why a government is voted out and another voted in. A vicious circle, where people never seem to learn.
All depends on your point of view really doesn’t it.
Example: I’m from England but I live in Guatemala. To get the vaccine for Covid, I’ve had to travel twice to Miami. In the USA they are vaccinating tourists for free. It’s even announced over the airport tannoy. I had a choice of vaccines. Some could say, look how good the US is, giving vaccines to tourists. Others would say, typical the US hoarding vaccines instead of donating to poorer countries.
For me the black lives matter movement is a problem because it still differentiates people from others. The point is all lives matter. Every life matters but humans want to decide which life is more important. What about unborn lives? Apparently they don’t matter, 60 million abortions worldwide on a yearly basis.
Again, about 15 years ago I got beaten up in London (Penge) by a gang of black lads. Did I get beaten up because they were black? Of course not, I got beaten up cos they were thugs. In Britain, the only racism recognised in white on black. Is it the only racism that exists in Britain?
We all could go on and on, but where does it stop? You have to decide and draw a line. Let go of resentment. Otherwise resentment and hate will drag on.
