I don’t at all want to dampen the mood of this thread but Twitter is a cesspool. The worst cross slice of humanity.
And with the way so many seem so comfortable calling all Germans “Nazis” I think I’m more horrified not by the xenophobia, but that the public school system has failed these misguided people so terribly on their history and understanding of the world.
@Neukölln Don’t go there, twitter is a disgrace atm. I just read a tweet calling a crying little German girl a c**t. It’s a disgusting place right now.
Memories are long. My gran (god rest her soul as she would wish) lived through the blitz. She and I spent a LOT of time together when I was little. I also watched TV in England through the 80s 90s and 00s. Anti German feeling will always be in the English culture. Calling the current team (or any Germans today) anything related to the wars is just stupid but the undercurrent is there. My advice? stay off twitter.
It’s nothing to do with the school system, it did alright by me. The morons just can’t be bothered to read a book or any publication which might educate them. Their lack of knowledge is their own fault, nobody else.
There are plenty of other countries which suffered during the second world war. Countries which were invaded and who lived under nazi rule. There’s no excuse for bringing up the war every time Germany is mentioned like the English do.
Not all ‘the English’, that’s a sweeping generalisation. Yes some do, there’s no denying that but some Scots and Welsh do also. And Basil Fawlty of course.
I missed the first hour of the game. I understand that we played alright and that Germany’s performance was a bit flat?
I’ve also read that a vocal section of the England supporters booed the German national anthem and I’ve seen references online to jingoistic comments and behaviour. I’m sorry to the German posters on here for the ignorance and disrespect shown by those individuals. They don’t reflect my views nor those of the majority of English people.
I’m used to it by now, but today I read a lot of German comments from younger people who were shocked and couldn’t understand what was happening. From the boooing of the national anthem to the bad insults, there was no sporting fairness. Unfortunately, these are the pictures and now these disgusting tweets that are now going around the world. Not everyone is lucky enough to know some really nice English people.
Yeah, Germany were strangely lethargic. They had a couple of moments, but seemed to lack belief. The key moment was a miss by Müller at 1-0 after being put through one on one with the England goalie (whose name cannot be mentioned). After that they appeared to give up. England were controlled and efficient.
It was a strange end for Löw. You’d think he’d want to go down fighting, but they went out not with a bang, but a whimper.
I am so sorry that you had to see these nasty tweets. Not all of us are like this. Its these minority fans which makes the majority of fans like myself feel frustrated and angry because we end being lumped into that category of neanderthals.
It is disgusting on twitter right now, however, i do see decent people answering back and reporting them. There is no sense of graciousness in defeat or appreciation of the opponent these days.
Tbh, today, i felt so ashamed as an England fan, when these morons showed their ill mannered behaviour by booing the German national anthem.
No wonder the UK’s 2nd generation children of immigrants found it hard supporting England in the 1970s and 1980s, we never felt welcomed enough because we were never English enough, until 1990.
I dread it every time England has an international match.
We haven’t even won the tornament, the creeping arrogance is so cringeworthy. Seeing the politicians get on the bandwagon and those very same papers praising Sterling as a hero tonight. Six months ago, they were writing negative articles about him.
If England had lost the match tonight. I am 100% sure, the twitter/Instagram racist abuse on some of our players would jumped 1000x times by a small section of idiots who ruin it for the majority of decent fans.
Hopefully, we will fight them and get rid of these bigots.
They went out doing what Low has been doing for the past 4 years or so…throwing shit against the wall in the hope something sticks. It’s a mark of a man who knows what they’re doing isn’t quite right, has the balls to do something different but doesn’t really have any conviction over what that plan B should be.
I don’t think this German side is quite as strong as others have said, but there is talent to call upon. I think it just needs fresher pair of eyes and a new voice.
Löw ran down the tunnel at the final whistle and re-emerged to give a stilted and spiky interview with German tv. It was tempting to imagine how Klopp would have been in similar circumstances, full of praise for his team, the fans and his opponents, smiling, hugging and fist bumping. Löw looked like he wanted the earth to open and swallow him up.
