Euro 2020 Archive Thread

I know France are not pleasing on the eye in last years, but they have results and the atmosphere looks much better than it was in the Domenech years or in that period when France were a shambles (though back then they also didn’t have the squad of today). This year it’s been disappointing. Initially, it looked like they found good balance again. I’d just be a little bit careful in wishing to bin Deschamps and put so much hope into Zidane. We’ll see what happens with Zizou now. There weren’t such great offers after his first Real period, which he was probably hoping for and there were quite a few big clubs changing at the time. Now he’ll hope for a different scenario. Or maybe he waits a little more than a year from now to takeover France after Qatar.

Pure speculation from me but this last year of Covid has made many people, myself included, re-evaluate the importance of what they’re doing in life and made big changes

I wouldn’t be surprised if Kroos and Rafa have been influenced by what has been happening in the world and these choices are to some extent a result of that.

I agree. But one thing that people need to do during this covid time is ironically spend more. That is what builds the economy.

And that indirectly does mean more ordering from outside etc etc.

It’s all good people trying to do things at home etc in the interest of safety and I respect that. But what is the actual stimulus is when people spend more too. That’s what will get the actual economy up.

It might be diverging onto a different tangent a bit though

Yeah it’s shit, but Vermalen is old enough and been around enough to have fucked up to get caught up in it rather than just getting on with defending.

Thankfully, this bizarre tournament formula won’t be re-edited:

Euro 2020 has been unfair for fans and a challenge for teams because of the vast difference in distances they have had to travel during the tournament, says Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin.

England play Italy in Sunday’s final at Wembley after a championship that has been played in cities in 11 countries.

Switzerland travelled the furthest, 15,485km (9,622 miles), while Scotland clocked up the shortest at 1,108km.

“I would not support it anymore,” Ceferin told BBC Sport.

Speaking to BBC sports editor Dan Roan on a special Euro 2020 episode of The Sports Desk podcast, Ceferin conceded the format had been “too challenging”.

He added: "In a way, it is not correct that some teams have to travel more than 10,000km while others have to only travel 1,000km.

"It is not fair to fans, who had to be in Rome one day and in Baku over the next few, which is a four and a half hour flight.

"We had to travel a lot, into countries with different jurisdictions, different currencies, countries in the European Union (EU) and Non-EU, so it was not easy.

“It was a format that was decided before I came [into post] and I respect it. It is an interesting idea but it is hard to implement and I don’t think we will do it again.”

This was definitely a Platani venture. Even the argument that a pan european celebration was justified to celebrate the 60 year anniversary of the first edition of the tournament doesnt make sense because why make such a point of a 60 year anniversary? If it was a 100 year celebration of UEFA as an organization or something like that I’d understand more, but the argument never made sense.

Washing your hands off, are you??? As if it was an insurmountable challenge to change the format.

“We made more money doing it the other way excepting bribes from one country”

I’m sure they could have changed this based on mumbling “Covid”.

I believe it’s all in Germany in 2024.

Love the man and his voice.

It’s coming home, or so they say. One thing is sure when Ukraine is playing, it’s not a cagy affair and goals are bound to come.

Philosophical question for the forum: can “it” be coming home when “it” is not the World Cup?

‘It’ was originally in reference to euro 96, so I think it’s reasonable.

Cheers, I actually had no idea about that! (I should do some Googling before asking questions next time. :see_no_evil:)

Well, even The Netherlands could beat Ukraine so England who has a much better side will have no problems, 3-0.
