It’s quite a different skillset. A club manager will work daily with players and try to develop them. If there are gaps where there is no one good enough they can badger the clubs owners for something better.
An national team manager has to make do with what is available (and possibly spot less lauded qualifying players who can do a job for them) and then either choose a system to fit their best players or choose players that can work within their preferred system.
It’s why I always thought being an international manager would drive Klopp up the wall, although given his exhaustion with us, it might now suit him.
Yeah, that is what I mean. Howe has been around long enough now to have identified whether he’d be a decent fit for the England job. Other than Newcastle being so bad this year that trying to hire him in the aftermath would be rejected by the fans and treated as a toxic decision, there really shouldnt be anything about what happens with Newcastle this season that should change anyone’s minds at the FA about whether he’d be a good fit. Whether you finish 4th or 8th in the prem really isnt what is going to make you successful in this role.
FWIW, I think Eddie’s success with Newcastle the season before last is a good marker of being decent for England. It’s not that he finished 4th, but the way he put an imperfect team together that was good enough to finish 4th.
yeah, Klopp managing a team knowing that their fans singing about German bombers, are you kidding? Klopp loves to build a strong bond with his players and the fans. That definitely won’t work in this case…so forget about it. Won´t happen.
Leaving out Rashford and Grealish was total lunacy even coming of the bench they might have made a difference especially Rashford he would have frightened the living daylights out of Slovenia
Spaelletti has had to apologize for a rant he went on towards Italian journos after the Croatia match
But what seemed really over the top was his answer when asked whether he and the players had made a “pact” over how to approach the Croatia game.
“Pact? Who told you that? Who told you that I speak to my players about such things? Whoever leaks stuff like this from inside… the pact is against us” he said. “I know what’s going on here.”
Turning to the journalist who asked the question, he added; “How old are you? 51? Well, if you j— off every day for another 14 years maybe you’ll know as much as me.”
With Allegri’s bizarre behavior after their win in the Copa final and now this, I think we need to get to the bottom of what is going on with Italian managers
In fairness, Italian trainers have to deal with Italian players, Italian officials, Italian politicians, Italian journalists, Italian fans, the Catholic Church and their mothers.
It’s enough to drive anyone crazy.
