Trent is a unicorn and we’ve relied heavily on his long balls for years. To some extent, Klopp also failed to reduce that reliance.
But Trent became too arrogant over the last few seasons, and playing nonstop since he was 18 has caused him to slow down a lot these past two years. I believe the theory that top players only have about 500 top games in them. So even though he’s only 28, I think Trent has already gone through most of his peak.
I wouldn’t have him back purely because I think his mentality has changed significantly and isn’t what the group needs at the moment, especially with the old guard moving on.
As for the scapegoat part… Yes, he’d be an easy target for Mourinho’s antics. Imagine Trent doing one of his classic walkabouts that would lead to Real Madrid conceding…
Valverde fills in multiple roles, just like Szobo but better. Can never have too many of those sorta players. I’ll even be willing to let Macca go if Valverde is coming in to replace
We do know everything Jose Mourinho managed in his career, right? Different teams, players, etc. Not every player was exactly a Jorge Costa/John Terry/Javier Zanetti type.
He wouldn’t be what he is, if he’d see Trent immediately as some sort of a problem he can’t solve, if he takes over Real. I believe he’d be happy to work with him. Real would need two RB’s if they would get rid of him, I don’t see any issues there. Get him fit and work on their game, reach balance.
Mourinho’s Real 11/12 side had the best counter-attacking or offensive transition phase I’ve seen in football. Nothing went faster to the opposition’s goal with such precision, quality and killer instinct than that.
Though in general, I have no idea how that will all go if he goes back there, but it was always a possibility. Especially with Real running out of options, how often they change them.
Just picked this up on reddit:
The OP had the subject title “Dani Carvajal mocks the lazy tracking back of Trent Alexander-Arnold against Real Betis.” It could just be 1+1=3.
