Ex-player: Xabi Alonso

I listen to fan phone ins on radio merseyside and Alonso is nowhere near such an overwhelming choice as he appears to be on here..

Who are they suggesting as a future manager @Rambler?

Glasner’s name seems to crop up a bit for some reason but otherwise Enrique, Nagelsmann and Alonso.

There was a lot of noise about Sebastian Hoeneß last week. I’m not sure where that originated from.

I just googled him, coach for Stuttgard.
What do they say about him in the Bundesliga?

He’s very highly rated. Operates a high press, so quite similar to Klopp in some respects. I don’t know where the rumours about him started. It could well just be social media noise.

He was mentioned in the Athletic article from almost 2 years ago explaining the process when Slot was hired, among the alternative options that were taken into some sort of consideration. That he has (or had) some admirers at the club. Not sure if he’s even linked with us right now.

Our German friends will know more about the reliability of the author of the text but eagle-eyed Twitteratti say this is the guy who first broke the Wirtz to Liverpool news.

I thought that was Bayern Space

He is. When Xabi was in Leverkusen, Axel Hesse and Pippo Arens always had the best information, including information that no one else had. They were close to him & his circle. They also always had the right information regarding Wirtz’s transfer. They are the most reliable ones

The Bild article was written by Axel Hesse.

There are also rumours that Alonso wants significantly more control over squad planning, etc…more leaning towards manager rather than head coach model. I am not sure if FSG current set up will want that though.

I think it ultimately depends on what they each consider as being ‘control’. Particularly after how this season has played out any coach coming in will needs some reassurances in that space and of course, Xabi will have had issues relating to that while at Real Madrid.

I think that’s why Sebastian Hoeneß’s name was being floated around again recently. Hoeneß is more on the head coach rather than manager model.

It can be a game of words or you can have different people in the same roles, but working better or worse together.

First of all, we need to see what would happen if Hughes would leave. But my guess is that the owners would want to continue with the same structure, with someone else in case Hughes leaves and it remains a question whether Edwards would even be replaced in his role or not.

Then I’m pretty sure Xabi would be aware that no, he wouldn’t be the manager here, but the head coach. Then of course the dynamics can be a bit different regardless if his role is the same as Slot’s.

Back when we had the “transfer committee” am I wrong in thinking Klopp wasn’t in charge of it but did have essentially a veto on whether the transfer went through. I think that’s fair enough.

Surely it is the coaches role to identify the position that a player is required and ideally the type of player for that role and then it is up to Hughes, scouts etc to come up with solutions.

Then they sit around the table to discuss the best option, tactically, technically, fitness and personality wise. The coach must be paramount in this decision making within reaso .

A list is then produced and Hughes then has the procurement job.

However it pans out, it can’t go to either extreme. The new manager/head coach should not have full control, given the scale of the organization at Liverpool. And neither should he have the posture of an underling, grateful to receive a player or two as and when, from another man’s vision for what the team should be.

It should be a collaborative, joined up approach. The head coach will have a vital say, but not the only say. Where the boundary lines are exactly drawn will be the stuff of negotiation during the recruitment process.

Exactly. And as they discuss the best option, the money involved will factor into it. The coach might slightly prefer player A over player B, all things being equal; but if player A is going to use up too much of the budget so that other moves might be affected, the coach might be quite happy to go with player B.

There’s a ton of scenarios, but it should be a collaborative process.
