Ex-player: Xabi Alonso

We don’t know what options will be open to him this summer but they will probably be limited, with this giving him a club that can compete in a big league.

Chelsea do have a decent squad who are capable of competing for trophies, in a league that doesn’t have anyone really running away with the title, and he may get assurances around their work in the transfer market not destabilising things any further.

He is probably also a stronger managerial candidate than they have had for quite some while.

I really don’t get the casual dismissal of anyone going to Chelsea. We might hate them as a club but that’s really our own business, isn’t it.

I read a report that at some point Alonso has stated he would like to return to RM as manager, when the behind the scenes were not so political as they are now. Maybe an apprenticeship at Chelsea were navigating similar politics, is also a learning curve for achieving the skills needed for a modern day football manager

I know they hate us, but I always considered that a “their problem”.

Re Alonso going there specifically, it’s not hate it’s that they’ve been a car crash club since Clearlake took over and he should be far above their level.

Should he?

Didn’t he have Real, Munich, City and Liverpool in his guillotine clause at Leverkusen?

Rafa was too good for Chelsea. Xabi ain’t.

They’ve had 7 managers in the last 5 years (8 if you count the current caretaker guy), the most recent of which was some nobody they plucked from their feeder club in France who lasted all of three months.

No self-respecting coach who is serious about their career progression should be touching them with a bargepole at this point.

Three years pay for three months work?

I think any coach would be interested in that.

The last thing Xabi would want on his CV after a failed three months at Madrid is a failed three months at Chelsea.

We have certainly something to think about, but to call this (not going for Alonso now) a “huge gamble” is an exaggeration in my opinion.

Not at all. Huge gamble is pretty sparing in it’s unenthusiasm. Fucking thick is much more like it.

Isn’t the reference to being a big gamble to do with retaining Arne rather than not bringing in Xabi?

I didn’t read the piece, was referring to the headline. Not going for Alonso now being a huge gamble. It’s not black and white, but huge gamble? Not for me.

Chelsea mouthpiece literally saying that, if that’s not a come and get me plea I don’t know what is.

If I was Xabi, I’d wait until the World Cup … see what jobs come up. Not like the Chelsea job won’t reappear next season.

If he wants to take over another club it would be stupid to waiting until the word cup ends. Anyone would want to come in as early as possible.

It’s an easy call for Xabi in my opinion assuming the LFC ship has sailed. Unfortunately.

  1. Money. It’s always about money. And there would be plenty on the contract.
  2. The EPL is the most watched and competitive so he is challenged
  3. Big Club worldwide
  4. Underachieved so the only way should be up and therefore a good time to take the gig
  5. Pretty good playing list who need a kick up the backside (that sounds familiar…)
  6. London maybe?

Anyway it’s a natural fitting story given his and Chelsea’s availability. But he should be coming to Anfield.

I meant until it starts.

You could have a domino effect with Bayern and Man City for starters.

Rush to sign for Chelsea and then the job comes up at Bayern due to Kompany going to Man City for example.

Enrique steps down from PSG after CL and he goes…

Give yourself 2 weeks as you’ll probably have a choice.
